Adria, Orici of the Ori

Summary

Adria was the human spawn of the Ascended Beings known as the Ori. She had all the knowledge of the Ori that a human brain could hold, yet because she was human, her existence didn't violate the rules of the Ascended. Her mother was Vala Mal Doran, who was impregnated without her consent. Adria was the Orici, the human-form embodiment of the Ori, who led the Ori's Priors and armies in their crusade in the Milky Way to convert humanity into worshippers, and to destroy those who resisted. Adria ascended and replaced the Ori after they had been destroyed when SG-1 sent Merlin's Anti-Ascended Weapon to their home galaxy. Adria's reign ended after SG-1 weakened her through the use of the Alterans' Ark of Truth, and Morgan Le Fay engaged her in a struggle in the ascended planes.

When Vala Mal Doran found herself unexpectedly transported to the Ori's home galaxy, she was still suffering from the lingering effects of the Kor Mak bracelets she had used against Daniel Jackson and herself in order to ensure that she got her "fair share" of the treasure discovered in Avalon in the Glastonbury Tor in England. Her ring transporter matter stream rematerialized on the ring platform of Ver Isca, and she was discovered unconscious there by a local village man named Tomin. Tomin took her to his home and nursed her back to health, feeling that Vala was a gift from the gods, the Ori. (9.01 "Avalon Part 1", 9.06 "Beachhead", 9.19 "Crusade Part 1")

During her recovery, Vala discovered that she was pregnant. Unsure as to how she would be treated as an unwed mother, she convinced Tomin to marry her and then told him the baby was his. Eventually, the village administrator decided to test Vala and had her chained to the village's altar. Tomin watched as this was done and did nothing to stop it. Vala was not given any food or water and soon she collapsed. She had a vision that was most likely a suppressed memory of her being visited by a fiery being. It was at this point that Vala was impregnated against her will. (9.19 "Crusade Part 1")

Tomin eventually released Vala from the altar and dared anyone to stop him. He took her home and nursed her back to health once more. Amazingly, the baby was not harmed during Vala's ordeal. Tomin was visited by the village's Prior and told that the child was the will of the Ori and that he was not the father. He knew that Vala didn't believe in the Ori, but because he loved her, he continued to dedicate himself to their marriage and supported her, hoping that one day, he'd be able to save her soul. Vala, in turn, also wished to save Tomin from the Ori to whom he was so faithful and for whom he was willing to kill innocent people in their name. (9.19 "Crusade Part 1")

When the Ori successfully sent four warships through a newly-constructed "Supergate", Vala knew that she had only one last chance to get home. She joined Tomin on his ship and witnessed the decimation of the allied fleet. Not long after the end of the battle, the four warships went into hyperspace, heading for Chulak. While en route, Vala gave birth to her daughter. (9.20 "Camelot Part 2", 10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

The baby was taken from Vala immediately after birth. The Prior onboard the ship announced the purpose of the little girl: "In this vast expanse, that is sheltered by evil and led astray, she will be the beacon of light in the darkness, to the warriors of the Ori, and to all who follow the true Path to salvation. With the wisdom of the ages, she will lead us to glorious victory over any and all unbelievers." (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

Tomin and all the others in the room, except for Vala, immediately bowed down to the child, calling her the "Orici" — from one, all will learn. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

Vala begged to see her daughter, to care for her and feed her. Tomin went to the Prior on her behalf and the Prior agreed to let Vala see the child. Amazingly, only hours after birth, Adria was already physically about four years old, much to Vala's shock. The young girl knew that Vala was an unbeliever, but reassured her that she would show her the Path. Already at this young age, Adria was endoctrinated to Origin. The child placed her hand on Vala and healed her from the pain she suffered after giving birth. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

The next time Vala saw her daughter, she had the appearance of a seven year old. At this age, the Orici was very articulate and knew what her purpose was. She told Vala that she was the closest thing to being an Ori as could exist in flesh and blood. She also tried to convince Vala that the Ori's cause was just and that the only way for them to survive was for humanity of the Milky Way to either convert to Origin or be destroyed. Vala did not believe this and wondered why her daughter was so adament that she believe, but then realized that the Orici had some measure of humanity in her — she sought her mother's love and approval. Vala gave her daughter the name "Adria", claiming it was her mother's name and that she admired her for being a strong woman. "Adria", however, was the name of Vala's "wicked" step-mother whom Vala truly despised. Even though Adria knew this, she still adored her mother. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

Daniel Jackson used the ring transporter on the Korolev to board the nearest Ori warship during the battle just before the Korolev was destroyed. Coincidentally, he happened to board the ship that Vala was on. He located her and Vala told him about Adria. Both of them realized that the Ori were getting around the rules of the Ascended by creating one of their own in human form. Because Vala knew that Adria sought her approval, she thought that she could influence her and make her turn from the Ori, thus becoming the Milky Way's strongest weapon against the powerful beings. Daniel and Vala conspired to capture Adria and escape with her after the warship had landed on Chulak and the army was distracted with the invasion. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

While Daniel stood outside Adria's apartment dressed as an Ori warrior, Vala went to speak with Adria and distract her so that Daniel could stun her. During their conversation, Vala tried to convince Adria, who now appeared as a twelve year old, not to slaughter the Jaffa living on Chulak. Adria knew that the Jaffa sought the Path to Enlightenment, but she was still set on forcing them into servitude and killing them if she had to. Adria's cold heart became even more evident when Tomin captured Daniel and brought him before her. She already knew that Daniel and Vala were conspiring against her, most likely obtaining this information by reading Vala's mind. Adria ordered Tomin to kill Daniel with his staff weapon, but Vala quickly pushed Daniel aside just as Tomin fired and the blast hit her. Adria was horrified and immediately went to Vala's side to heal her. While both Adria and Tomin were focused on Vala, Daniel used the warrior weapon attached to his arm to stun them both. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

The Prior then entered the room to protect Adria. He tried to strike fear in Daniel and Vala by putting up a wall of fire and walking through it. Daniel pointed the warrior weapon at Adria, but the Prior rendered the weapon inoperable. When Daniel attempted to fire his sidearm, the Prior telekinetically ripped the weapon out of his hand. Just as the Prior was about to use his orbed staff against them, they were beamed away by the Odyssey. Their attempt to capture Adria had failed. (10.01 "Flesh And Blood Part 3")

The Powers of the Orici

Adria subdues Daniel with her mental powers
Adria's pendant, claimed to hold a piece of Celestis
Adria's defense shield protects her

Within the next eight days, Adria had grown into a young woman with extraodinary powers and led her army to capture six more planets, two of them Jaffa strongholds. (10.02 "Morpheus")

SG-1 and Vala witnessed the Orici's powers firsthand when they were on a recon mission to a planet on which an Ori warship had landed. During Adria's speech to the crowd, the Free Jaffa used the weapon on Dakara to send a deadly wave through the Stargate. Adria was the only one on the planet to survive. SG-1 and Vala had been beamed to safety onboard the Odyssey as soon as the wave was detected. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Realizing that the Ori warship was no longer manned, SG-1 and Vala boarded the vessel in order to obtain information on its systems, perhaps even learning to operate it in their own defense. The Free Jaffa had the same idea, and soon the two parties were at odds as to who could have control of the ship. While the Jaffa held Mitchell and Teal'c as prisoners, Carter continued to secretly investigate the systems in the ship's control room. Daniel and Vala were discovered by the Jaffa, but they were interrupted by Adria, who killed all of the Jaffa with the power of her mind. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Adria was happy to see Vala. She was told that Vala abandoned her, but she believed that Vala cared for her and had returned to her. She promised that they would never be separated again and hugged Vala. All the while, she kept Daniel in a choke hold with her mind because he had tried to disable her with a zat. She even levitated a staff weapon and activated it to fire on him, but Vala stopped her. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Adria told Vala she had survived the deadly wave with the help of a pendant, said to hold a piece of Celestis, the home of the Ori. The pendant is small, but provides Adria with a personal defense shield. It is not yet known if she draws anything from it to enhance her mental powers like the Priors do with their orbed staffs. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

In an attempt to gather information about the weapon used against her people on the planet, Adria tried to force Daniel to tell her about the weapon, but he resisted, impressing Adria with his strong mind. She then turned her attention to one of the Jaffa she had killed, revived him, and forced him to reveal the location of the weapon. As soon as he told her it was on Dakara, she killed him again by snapping his neck. While interrogating the Jaffa, Adria kept Vala and Daniel from interfering through the use of her mental powers. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Adria further demonstrated her powers by solely operating the ship. She launched the ship into orbit, destroyed three of the Free Jaffa's ha'tak vessels, and entered hyperspace toward Dakara. She also stopped the detonation of the C-4 Mitchell and Teal'c had planted in the ship's power plant. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Adria wanted her mother to stay with her and turn to Origin. She felt that her crusade would be a failure if she was unable to convince her own mother to become a believer. Vala told her that she was a stubborn person, but after realizing that Adria was intent on killing more people, Vala offered to stay with her if she'd let SG-1 and the Jaffa go. Adria said that she was too late, but that she'd keep Daniel alive because the Ori had plans for him. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

SG-1 was beamed away by the Odyssey after Carter successfully brought down the Ori warship's shields. Adria then destroyed the weapon on Dakara and devastated the planet, so much so that the Stargate was buried. The Jaffa sent a cargo ship there to investigate and found no survivors. Dakara was no more, and with its fall, the Free Jaffa lost their hope of a united people. Adria went on to lead her army in conquering five more planets, include Earth's allies on Hebridan and Langara. The Orici was expecting several more warships from the Ori's home galaxy to support her efforts and predicted that the entire galaxy would be converted in under a year. (10.07 "Counterstrike")

Adria Seeks the Sangreal

Adria disguised as Osric
Ba'al challenges Adria's powers
Daniel calls Adria's bluff concerning her powers

The formerly-Ascended Merlin knew about the threat the Ori posed to both the ascended planes of existence and the corporeal plane. He retook human form to develop a weapon that could be used to eliminate the Ori, but the device he created could eliminate the Ascended Ancients as well. Because of this, The Others sent Morgan Le Fay, another Ascended, to watch his progress and stop him if necessary. According to research conducted by Daniel Jackson from Merlin's records, the device was in the form of a blood-red pendant that had become known in Arthurian legends as the Sangreal, or Holy Grail. Apparently, Morgan stole the device from Merlin, and Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table went after her, thus beginning their quest. Merlin disappeared about the same time as Arthur and his men departed on their search. (9.20 "Camelot Part 2", 10.03 "The Pegasus Project", 10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Somehow, Adria learned of the existence of the Sangreal, the only weapon that threatened the Ori. She also began a search for it and successfully found a planet that by all appearances was the place where Morgan hid the device. Morgan designed several failsafes on the planet to keep outsiders from finding the planet, as well as challenges that tested a person's truth of spirit. She also left behind the Parchment of Virtues that mentioned the guardian (a dragon) and five virtues (prudence, wisdom, charity, kindness, and faith) and a map that would aid one who sought the prize. (10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Because Adria knew that Morgan had left safeguards in place that would prevent her from actually possessing the Sangreal, she devised a plan to get Daniel Jackson on the planet. This might have been the "plans" she alluded to when she saw him last on the abandoned warship (10.07 "Counterstrike"). In her mind, a former Ascended was most likely to be one who met the "truth of spirit" requirement. She gave the solution to the planet's location to Vala in a dream, proving that she possessed mental powers that were on par with Ascended Beings. (10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Once SG-1 arrived on the planet, they were told to visit the village archives where they'd have access to the Parchment of Virtues to aid in their quest. The team met the village's librarian, Osric, who showed them the Parchment and told them of the dangers, but refused to show the map because a previous group of adventurers had tried to steal it. This group was led by Ba'al, who desired to use the Sangreal against all Ascended Beings and gain galactic dominance. (10.04 "Insiders", 10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Adria staged an invasion of the village that sent Osric into hiding. He found refuge with SG-1 and told them that he could show them the way after the Parchment, map, and all other documents had been burned by the Ori soldiers. SG-1 set off on their quest with Osric as their guide. They made it through the first challenge, a time distortion "maze" that tested the virtue of prudence, and then the second where they met up with Ba'al. This challenge was a force field that could only be turned off by placing a personal possession in a chest (the test of one's charity). Osric gave a ring for his personal possession. As the group continued their walk, Osric and Daniel discussed the Ori, and Daniel was taken slightly aback when Osric paraphrased scripture from The Book of Origin. Once Osric showed the group the opening to the caves where the Sangreal was allegedly hidden, Daniel and Mitchell questioned him and his intentions. Daniel challenged him with his knowledge of the scripture and the possession of the ring that was of Ori design. It was at this point that Adria revealed herself. She had been Osric all of this time! (10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Adria told SG-1 that she aimed to use Daniel to get the Sangreal and threatened Carter's life in order to gain their cooperation. The group went into the cave and faced the challenges of kindness (rescue the lost boy) and wisdom (solve the riddles in the Ancient language). Adria actually helped the group at critical times, but when they reached a wall of fire with no apparent way around, Adria wouldn't use her powers to snuff out the flames. Ba'al challenged her about this and she claimed that her powers didn't work that way and then turned her back on him when he pressed further. Daniel's solution to merely walk through the flames was the correct one because he determined that faith was the last virtue to be tested. The flames disappeared once he walked through them, and the group moved forward into a huge cavern with a bridge to a pedestal on which the glowing Sangreal appeared to rest. (10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

Adria insisted that only she and Daniel approach the device. While there, Daniel called her bluff about her powers — she had none because Morgan's failsafes had neutralized her Ori-given capabilities. Her personal shield was her only advantage, but only for defensive purposes. Daniel told her that they would help her no longer and stepped forward to take the Sangreal, but to both his and Adria's surprise, the Sangreal was a hologram and Daniel's hand passed through it. They had forgotten about the final challenge — to speak the name of the Sangreal's guardian. Soon, they were faced with a flying, fire-breathing dragon! (10.10 "The Quest Part 1")

The group fled from the dragon, evading its fireballs and eventually finding a way out of the cave. The dragon followed them outside where it continued to terrorize them. Adria insisted that they had to face the dragon and return to the cave, but Ba'al proposed that they return to the village. Daniel agreed with Adria and finally figured out the dragon's name. Actually, it wasn't the dragon's name, but Morgan Le Fay's Ancient name, Ganos Lal, that made the dragon disappear. As soon as Daniel shouted out "Ganos Lal", the dragon challenge was removed, and the group returned to the pedestal where the holographic Sangreal rested. Again, Daniel's hand passed through it, but the next phase of their quest commenced, transporting all but Adria into a chamber on another planet that held Merlin in stasis. (10.11 "The Quest Part 2")

Adria Plans to Use the Sangreal

Daniel fights Adria for possession of Merlin's incomplete weapon
Adria turns Daniel into a Prior, but Merlin protects him
Vala assembles Merlin's Anti-Ascended Weapon

The team revived Merlin from stasis, and after hearing how they got there, Merlin decided to build another one of his weapons. Morgan Le Fay had to destroy the original one so that The Others would be satisfied, but she preserved Merlin in stasis so that if necessary, he could build the weapon once again. After having spent over one thousand years in stasis, Merlin's body was too weak for the task, so he uploaded his consciousness into a device similar to a Repository of Knowledge, and Daniel took the download. They were in a race against being found by Adria, so Daniel worked as quickly as possible, but his body was going through a tremendous amount of stress as Merlin modified his physiology in order to harbor the knowledge and interface with the device. He got as far as Stage 2 before Adria caught up with them. She was able to mentally interface with the Dial Home Device of each planet to which the team was transported through Le Fay's programming and to discover the location of their next transport. Daniel killed Adria's Ori soldiers with bolts of lightning while Carter dialed home and fought against Adria to see that his team escaped, but he stayed behind with the incomplete Weapon. Adria took him and his work to an Ori warship, and the team lost track of him. (10.11 "The Quest Part 2")

Daniel tried to convince Adria that he no longer had the knowledge to rebuild the weapon after he used up all of his strength to fight against her, but she didn't believe him. Instead of torturing him for the information, Adria attempted to seduce him to Origin, promising him many things. Daniel and Merlin agreed that they should gain Adria's trust so that they could complete the weapon. This trust also included Adria's converting Daniel into a Prior. Merlin's presence within Daniel permitted Daniel to deceive Adria completely. As a Prior, Daniel had the advantage of being able to move about freely and to pilot the Ori warship. He planned to complete the weapon, steal the warship, and fly it through the Supergate to the Ori's home galaxy where the weapon would detonate. Adria stopped Daniel from assembling the weapon, but he did complete all of the pieces. She wished for them to work on gathering more worshippers to build up the Ori's power so that they could distract the Ancients long enough for her to complete the weapon and then detonate it against the Ancients after the Ori left the galaxy. (10.11 "The Quest Part 2", 10.14 "The Shroud")

Adria's plan allowed Daniel the freedom he needed to be captured by his team and to ask for their help in severing the wormhole connection between a Stargate in the Pegasus Galaxy and the Supergate (established in 10.03 "The Pegasus Project"). But, because Daniel was a Prior, his word was not trusted. They activated an Anti-Prior Device against him and strapped him to a chair onboard the Odyssey. Daniel gave them the information they needed to complete his plan, but he had been gone too long and Adria missed him. She figured out what he was doing, and after Daniel overcame the Anti-Prior Device and stole the Odyssey with Jack onboard to intercept her, she almost stopped SG-1 from executing their plan. Daniel used the last of his advanced human powers to overcome Adria's personal shield and disable her, and then he used his Prior abilities to dial the Supergate and pilot the warship toward its destination. Vala had assembled the weapon with a five-minute timer, and Jack beamed all of them except for Adria to the Odyssey before the warship went to the Ori's galaxy. Adria still remained unconscious onboard the warship. Merlin's programming of Daniel's body ran out and he returned to his state before the download. None of them knew if the weapon had actually worked. (10.14 "The Shroud")

Adria Ascends

Ba'al implants Adria with one of his symbiotes
Adria uses her last bit of strength to prepare herself to ascend
Vala witnesses Adria's ascension

Adria returned to the Milky Way onboard one of the many warships that came through the Supergate not long after SG-1 sent Merlin's weapon. After hearing about her return, the team devised a plan to capture her and force her to command her army to leave the galaxy, hoping that the weapon had succeeded in eliminating the Ori. Vala used herself as bait, and Adria decided to help her mother find an Ancient treasure so that they could remain together. The planet to which they 'gated was where the team had set up a trap, but Ba'al captured Adria instead. Apparently, he used his contacts within The Trust to devise a plan of his own. He implanted Adria with one of his clone symbiotes, hoping to gain the power of her army to obtain galactic domination. (10.19 "Dominion")

SG-1 tracked Ba'al's ship and recaptured Adria, but it was too late. Ba'al had taken complete control of Adria because she had been reduced to a normal human through the use of technology he engineered based off of the Anti-Prior Device. Before the implantation, Adria had told Vala that the Ori were still alive, but afterwards, Adria/Ba'al claimed that they were dead. The team decided to implant a Tok'ra symbiote into Adria to make sure the information was valid and to command the army to withdraw, but Ba'al released a toxin during the procedure to remove him. Weakened by the poison, Adria knew that her body was dying and decided to ascend. Daniel figured out what she planned and tried to prevent it, but Adria used the last of her strength to lock herself into her room with Vala. Vala tried to shoot Adria, but Adria stopped her and then ascended. (10.19 "Dominion")

Daniel theorized that if the Ori were truly gone, that Adria had just taken their place, gaining the power they once had as a collective for herself alone. Apparently, The Others didn't interfere in her ascension, because it was determined that she most likely tipped off her Priors when the Odyssey traveled to the Asgard's home galaxy for major upgrades, including energy weapons designed specifically to penetrate the Ori warships' shields. The Others might have kicked Adria out of the Milky Way, or she left the galaxy on her own, but she still had her powers to manipulate events in the Milky Way, just as the Ori had from their distant home galaxy. The Odyssey was able to destroy two warships before returning home, but they had to disconnect the Asgard Computer Core from their hyperdrive to prevent the Ori army from tracking their movement through hyperspace. (10.19 "Dominion", 10.20 "Unending")

Adria's Reign Ends

Adria manifests as the Flames of Enlightenment in the Ori's stead
Adria takes on her human appearance, but lit with supernatural flames
Adria appears demon-like as she prepares to battle Morgan

As it turned out, the Ori were indeed eliminated by the detonation of Merlin's weapon, and as soon as Adria ascended, she took their place to become one of the most powerful ascended beings in existence. Even so, she was not satisfied until she had enough power to go after all of the Ascended Ancients herself. When the Priors witnessed the Ori's Flames of Enlightenment go out, they took it to mean that the Ori were not satisfied with what the people were doing in their crusade and wanted them to do more. Adria allowed this interpretation to continue, so that the people would be willing to do more for her. She didn't tell the Doci or her Priors that the Ori were dead. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

When SG-1 went through the Supergate to the Ori home galaxy, the Ascended Ancient Morgan Le Fay secretly went with them. She had been giving Daniel hints about the location of a piece of Alteran technology called the Ark of Truth. The Alterans decided not to use this device on their Ori brethren those millions of years ago because it would be denying them the ability to use their own free will—it was a brainwashing machine. The Ori even those millions of years ago had become unreasonable in their doctrine of "Origin" and sought to kill the Altera (the Ancients) but the Altera fled instead, leaving the Ori and the Ark behind. Daniel found the Ark and while he, Teal'c, Vala, and Tomin were studying it, they were ambushed by Ori soldiers. Teal'c was left for dead (he was later healed by Morgan), but the others and the Ark were taken to Adria in the City of the Gods of Celestis. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

After all three were tortured by the Doci and Priors, Adria called for Vala to be sent to her. Vala saw Adria's new ascended form as her daughter manifested herself as the new Flames of Enlightenment. In order to converse with Vala, Adria took on the appearance of her former human form, but was lit with supernatural flames (instead of the bright, pure white glow of the Ascended Ancients). Adria's hunger for power and her desire for vengeance against the Ascended Ancients were still in full force, but she decided not to use the Ark to gain more power. She claimed it wasn't "the same". Apparently, the power she needed had to be given to her only through the humans' willingness to worship her. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

Because Adria didn't destroy the Ark as soon as she knew what it was, Daniel and the others had the chance to activate it against the Doci. Remarkably, Daniel figured out the key to activate the Ark from something that Adria said: "It's over. You can't win. There is only one path ... the power and glory of Origin." Ironically, the password was "Origin" in Ancient, and the word "Origin" meant "truth" in the oldest form of the Ancients' language when the Altera and Ori lived together as one people. As soon as the Doci was exposed to the Ark's radiant light, he transmitted the message that the Ori were not gods through the psychic link he had with all of the Priors in the galaxy via their orbed staffs. The resulting drop in belief weakened Adria's power and gave Morgan the opportunity to engage Adria in a struggle in the ascended planes. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

The Priors in the Milky Way were still working on their standing orders to attack Earth, but as soon as one of them was exposed to the Ark, all were enlightened and their aggression stopped. Adria's power was most likely reduced even further with this withdrawal. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

Adria's goal of converting her mother, Daniel, and the entire Milky Way to Origin failed. She left behind many people who needed support and guidance as they had to adjust to the realization that the Ori were false gods and that they would not achieve ascension. Tomin, Vala's former husband and former Commander of the Ori army in the Milky Way, returned to his people to help guide them into a new era that used the basic truths from the apparent original version of The Book of Origin, removing all additions that the Ori had placed into the text in their quest for power and vengeance. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)
