Character Biography

Jack and Sara O'Neill were very much a happy couple. When Jack was injured in Iraq, it was his thoughts of getting home to Sara which drove him to survive (1.18 "Solitudes"). Sara seemed to understand Jack's "military bravado" and appeared to love him for the man he was underneath. They lived happily together until their son Charlie accidently shot and killed himself with Jack's personal handgun. Sara was able to forgive Jack, but it took a long time for Jack to come to terms with the guilt he felt for failing to protect his family (1.01 "Children Of The Gods Part 1", 1.07 "Cold Lazarus", 7.01 "Fallen Part 1").

Sara had a talent for fixing car engines (1.07 "Cold Lazarus").

Sara kept Charlie's room as it had been the day he died and often would sit on the bed and talk with him. This was how she worked through her grief, since Jack didn't talk with her. She only wished that he would open up to her and share in their grief, but he closed up and shut her out. This was one of the reasons why the two were not able to remain together (1.07 "Cold Lazarus"). Sara left Jack after his first mission to Abydos (1.01 "Children Of The Gods Part 1"). Jack, however, keeps a picture of her and Charlie in his home (7.03 "Fragile Balance", 7.21 "Lost City Part 1").

When Jack thought that he was dying in Antarctica, he called out to Sara (1.18 "Solitudes"). When he thought he was about to die on the planet Argos, he began to write a letter to her, but never finished it (1.09 "Brief Candle"). These incidents happened after he and Sara were given a chance to say good-bye to Charlie together after a crystalline entity had taken on Charlie's form at the hospital in which Charlie had died (1.07 "Cold Lazarus"). After they held each other for a brief moment, Sara said to him, "We were pretty great together, weren't we?" to which Jack replied, "We were the greatest."
