INT—CONTROL ROOM

[Rush and Brody work on consoles. Riley, looking better, records their efforts using a kino that's zooming close to Rush.]

RUSH

(exasperated)

Riley…

RILEY
I think Eli would want someone documenting the efforts to rescue the team that was left behind.

RUSH
Well, given that Eli is one of the team that was left behind, I would have thought he'd have want everyone doing anything possible to help rescue them.

RILEY

(petulant)

Well, you didn't like my idea.

RUSH
Telling Destiny to go back and pick them up isn't going to work.

RILEY
How do you know?

RUSH
Because I've already tried it!

[Brody pulls up more star charts on the main panel.]

BRODY
I'm done.

[He steps away.]

RILEY

(into kino)

The Stargate aboard this ship is much more primitive than the later models found in the Milky Way. As you can see from this map, each time Destiny stops, it's in range of only a small group of 'gates. That means the next time we drop out of FTL, the planet the team was stranded on will no longer be in range of Destiny. However, Dr. Rush and Mr. Brody are working on—

[The kino powers down and drops to floor with a loud clunk.]

RILEY
That's weird.

BRODY
What happened?

RILEY

(picking up dead kino)

Well, the battery must've died.

BRODY
Okay…

RILEY
I just got this one fresh out of the dispenser.

[The holographic display fritzes out.]

RUSH
It wasn't me.

INT—JAMES'S QUARTERS

[TJ sits with James.]

JAMES
I am not the sort of person who just jumps into bed with anyone. I had thought we…

[James notices TJ looks distracted and somber.]

JAMES
Colonel Young asked you to check on me, didn't he?

TJ
Yes, but he's asking me to keep tabs on everybody. He believes in you.

JAMES

(rueful)

Well, he doesn't have much choice.

TJ
I'm also here because I'm your friend.

JAMES
I'm sorry, it's just that…

[All the power goes out.]

INT—YOUNG'S OFFICE

[In his darkened office, Young turns on a flashlight and grabs his radio.]

YOUNG

(into radio)

Rush, come in.

INT—CONTROL ROOM

RUSH

(into radio)

Yeah, we got several systems down. Looks like Destiny's activated some kind of power-saving mode.

BRODY
That's strange, because our reserves are still at almost maximum current capacity from the last recharge.

RUSH

(into radio)

Life support's fine. I should be able to work around it. Get the lights back on in a couple of minutes.

BRODY
Maybe we shouldn't.

RUSH
What?

BRODY
Work around it. I mean, there's got to be a good reason this is happening.

RILEY
This whole ship is falling apart. Computers don't last forever. Maybe it's a malfunction.

RUSH
Well, we're not going to be able to do anything in the dark.

INT—COLLAPSED CAVERN

[Greer leads Chloe, Eli, and Scott through the tunnels, away from the cave-in at the entrance. Scott and Greer use the lights on their rifles to see. Eli and Chloe have flashlights.]

ELI
We have two days of water, tops.

GREER
We'll find more.

SCOTT
Step one, we get out of these tunnels.

ELI
We're off to a bad start.

SCOTT
We'll find food and water.

ELI

(pessimistic)

They can't turn the ship around.

SCOTT
Then we'll use the 'gates to catch up.

ELI
In order to connect the dots between here and the Destiny, there have to be 'gates in range of each other between this planet and…and wherever Destiny stops next. Plus, this remote? Only tells you which 'gates are in range of this planet. Not where they are. There's no way to know which direction we'd be going. Oh, and in case that's not bad enough, we have no idea where Destiny went.

CHLOE
Whoa, one step at a time.

SCOTT
Yeah, let's all try and keep a positive attitude.

[Eli scoffs. The ceiling of the cave rumbles and dust falls down through some large cracks.]

GREER
C4 blast could've destabilized the whole place.

ELI

(sarcastic)

Oh that's just great.

SCOTT
We had to take the risk.

ELI

(scoffing)

We're seriously…

CHLOE

(admonishing)

Eli!

[The rumbles get worse then die down.]

SCOTT
All we can do right now is keep moving.

[Scott takes the lead. Greer nods to Chloe and Eli to move ahead while he guards the rear.]

OPENING CREDIT

INT—DESTINY CORRIDORS

[Young heads down the darkened corridor, carrying a flashlight to light his way. The flashlight dies out.]

YOUNG
Son of a…

[He slaps at the flashlight to no avail, but the power comes back on, so he just continues on.]

INT—CONTROL ROOM

YOUNG
So, what do we know?

RUSH
Not much. Several non-essential systems automatically shut down.

BRODY
We still only have limited control.

YOUNG
How about rescuing the team we left behind?

RUSH
As I've said, Colonel, we won't know if the planet they were left on is reachable until we've dropped out of FTL.

INT—CAVERNS

ELI
This is crazy. You'd think some of these tunnels would lead somewhere. No wonder the people that built this place died out. Probably all got lost down here, heh. Just wandered around, thinking: "Oh, if only we'd thought to put in a few more exits." Or how about one of those maps you see in a shopping mall, with a-a big red dot. "You are here."

[He gestures to the red tee-shirt under his fatigues that reads "You are here".]

ELI
How hard is that? I'd kill for a big red dot right now.

GREER
I can't take this anymore.

SCOTT
All right, let's stop. Take a…quick breather. Five minutes.

[Eli collapses to the floor.]

ELI
Thank god.

[Greer and Scott keep their rifles ready and watch either side of the corridor. Eli starts his remote.]

SCOTT
Still looking for that kino?

ELI
Uh, no.

SCOTT
So what are you doing?

ELI
Well, I've been thinking about using the 'gates, actually.

CHLOE
And?

ELI

(contrite)

I-I may have painted an overly bleak picture before. I'll admit, I was freaking out a little bit.

SCOTT
And now?

ELI
Well, we do know that Destiny is-is traveling down…a path, basically a-a corridor of 'gates left behind by, uh, the ships that were sent in advance. It meanders somewhat, but generally it heads in one direction. I mean, they wouldn't put gates on every planet in every galaxy.

SCOTT
Obviously not.

ELI
People don't realize how-how big a galaxy is!

CHLOE

(prompting)

Anyway…

[Eli draws two circles, putting a stones in each circle.]

ELI
Uh…let's say the 'gates in range of the planet we're on are in this circle. This circle represents the 'gates in range of Destiny the next time it drops out of FTL.

SCOTT
Okay, so we need to get to that circle.

[Eli places two small rocks between the circles and draws a line between the two small rocks, and then draws lines from each small rock to the rock in the center of the circle closest to it.]

ELI
Yeah, right. Now, hopefully, there are 'gates in range of each other between these circles. Once we are in range of Destiny, the address will show up on here.

[He holds up the remote and smiles wryly.]

ELI
You see how easy it is to make a simple map?

SCOTT

(rolling his eyes)

Okay, so how do we know we're going the right way?

ELI
We don't. But-but if we do go the wrong way, we'll either run out of addresses because we've reached the edge of the corridor or-or we'll run into planets we've been to before or at least addresses I'll hopefully remember or recognize. But… At least it's a fifty-fifty shot.

SCOTT

(sighing in relief)

Good.

[Greer signals to Scott with his fingers, staring at the ceiling behind them. Scott takes the hint.]

SCOTT

(quickly)

All right, we should really get moving.

ELI
Why? It hasn't been five minutes.

SCOTT
Eli, seriously!

[Eli grins at Scott, then sees where he's pointing. There is a large spider approaching along the ceiling. They quickly back away.]

INT—DESTINY CONTROL ROOM

[Brody stares at the star chart and several dots indicating Destiny's path to a large black area.]

BRODY
You seein' what I'm seein'?

RUSH

(sighing)

Yeah. Well, I suspected as much.

BRODY
Well, if it's true…

RUSH
I know.

BRODY
You're not going to tell Young?

RUSH
Well, it's not certain.

BRODY
You have to tell him.

[Rush rests his head on his hand and considers this.]

INT—INFIRMARY

[TJ and Young are in the empty infirmary.]

TJ
She's upset. We all are.

YOUNG
But she's fine, though? I mean, I don't have to worry about putting her back out there?

TJ
No. A few words of encouragement from you wouldn't hurt, though. She thinks you don't have any confidence in her, that you're only putting her out there because you don't have a choice.

YOUNG
I don't.

TJ
I know you think she's a good soldier.

YOUNG
Is she aware that I know about her previous relationship with Scott?

TJ

(sighing)

No. She's not over him, either. But that's not an issue.

YOUNG
Hmph. Thanks.

[Young starts to leave.]

TJ
Sir!

[Young pauses.]

TJ
There's something else, I, uh…need to tell you.

YOUNG
Well, that sounds serious.

TJ
I, uh…

RUSH

(over radio)

Colonel Young, come in.

YOUNG

(into radio)

Rush, go ahead.

RUSH

(over radio)

Yeah, you're going to want to see this.

YOUNG

(into radio)
I'll be right there.
(To TJ)

So, you, uh, you were going to say…

TJ
It can wait. It's more of a…longer conversation.

YOUNG
Okay.

[He leaves.]

INT—CONTROL ROOM

RUSH
When I was left behind on that planet with the crashed alien ship—

YOUNG

(curtly)

I remember.

RUSH
One of the things I saw there appeared to be a map of this galaxy, including the Stargates.

YOUNG
And?

RUSH
Well, Mr. Brody and myself have been working on our own map based on our own records of where Destiny has been thus far.

YOUNG
I thought Destiny had a map of where it's been.

RUSH
Yeah, but we're trying to create a clearer picture of the entire galaxy we're in.

YOUNG

(impatient)

Rush, just cut to the chase, will you?

RUSH
I was hoping to have some better news, but if I'm right, then we are at the very edge of this galaxy.

YOUNG
Now, how is that bad news? We know that Destiny travels between galaxies.

RUSH
Yeah, but the space between galaxies is huge. Vast. Empty.

YOUNG
You think that's why that power-saving protocol kicked in?

RUSH
I don't know. It could be, but more importantly, there will be no more 'gates. No chance of dialing back to this system. If we don't find them the next time we drop out of FTL, we won't have another chance.

INT—CAVERNS

[The team keep moving, Eli studying the kino remote.]

ELI

(laughing)

Oh my god!

SCOTT
What?

ELI
The kino! Look, look. An exit. The kino found an exit.

SCOTT

(flatly)

That's awesome. Where's the kino?

ELI
Oh, I have no idea.

SCOTT
Right. Exactly.

ELI
Come on, at least now we know that there is a way out of here.

SCOTT
Left or right? What's it going to be?

GREER
Uh, well, we're traveling blind, so what difference does it make?

SCOTT
Left. I like left.

ELI
No offense to what you like, man, but…

[Chloe studies an engraving on the wall with her miniature lantern.]

CHLOE
No, he's right. We should go left.

ELI
How do you know for sure?

CHLOE
Because that's what this map says. Huh. There's been a few of these along the way. I thought they were just decorative at first. So far they've all been the same except for one thing. This symbol seems to be in different places.

[Eli touches the symbol.]

ELI
"You are here." There have been maps down here this whole time?!

SCOTT
That's awesome. Are you-are you sure?

CHLOE
Well, this seems to be the fork we're standing at.

GREER
Yeah, well, there's only one way to find out.

[Greer takes off down the corridor.]

SCOTT
What are you doing?

GREER
Going to go look for another one.

SCOTT

(annoyed)

Greer?!

[There is a distant rumbling.]

SCOTT
Greer!

[Greer comes back around the corner.]

GREER
She's right. There's another map around…

[The ceiling above Greer collapses. He appears to step back behind the rockfall.]

SCOTT

(horrified)

Greer!

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny flies faster than light.]

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

[TJ and Park sort supplies.]

TJ
I tried. I did! Really! I-I was about to tell him, and then he got…called away by Rush.

PARK
Well, you should have told him anyway.

TJ

(sighing)

It just…it sounded important.

PARK
So is this.

TJ
I know.

PARK
He's going to find out soon enough. I mean, you're starting to show.

TJ
I know.

PARK
Are you afraid of what he's going to say?

TJ
Or not say, I don't know.

PARKER
Go tell him right now.

TJ
It just seems like there's always something…

[Destiny drops out of FTL.]

[TJ gives Park an "I told you so" look.]

INT—CAVERN

[Scott is closer to the new cave-in.]

CHLOE
Matt!

SCOTT

(standing)

I'm fine.

[The dust has cleared enough to show that the passageway beyond, where Greer was standing, is completely caved in. They all rush to it.]

ELI
Oh my god.

SCOTT

Greer! Greer! (into radio)
Come in, Greer.
(after a pause)

Ron, can you hear me?

CHLOE
Maybe the signal can't penetrate the rocks.

ELI

(sadly)

We could hear James pretty clearly.

[They start to move rocks.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny floats in normal space.]

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[Rush and Young enter the gate room. Rush is geared up for off-world travel. James and others are already waiting in front of the active Stargate.]

YOUNG
Three hours.

RUSH
Besides, uh, dialing, checking for safe environment, roughly eight to ten minutes per planet, factor in time to get back, we'll be able to see roughly twenty planets. At least we know the direction to go in.

JAMES
We'll find them, sir.

YOUNG
Good luck.

[The team departs.]

TJ

(over radio)

Colonel, it's TJ, come in.

YOUNG

(into radio)

Go ahead.

TJ

(over radio)

Have they left?

[Young heads out of the Gate room into the corridor.]

YOUNG

(into radio)

Yes. Unfortunately, it's a very short window.

TJ

(over radio)

Do you have some time to talk to private?

YOUNG

(into radio)

I'm just on my way to see Dr. Volker talk about the charging plates, putting them back on line. Nothing seems to be working around here. Can it wait?

[He hears only static over the radio. He checks to make sure it's working.]

INT—COLLAPSED CAVERN

[The trio keeps moving rocks.]

SCOTT

(desperate)

Greer! Come on, buddy! Greer!

ELI
Ow. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

[They roll a larger rock out, but can't control it completely and it falls with a thud. More dust and an ominous rumbling result.]

SCOTT

(resigned)

All right. Stop. Stop. Stop moving rocks.

[Chloe almost gets hit by part of the ceiling falling behind her.]

CHLOE
Whoa!

SCOTT
We need to get out of here.

[Eli looks at him incredulously.]

SCOTT

Look, I saw those rocks coming down and uh…
(he shakes his head, fighting tears)

I know he would want us to get out of here alive…

ELI

(shaking his head)

What?!

SCOTT
Especially if there was no hope for him.

CHLOE
Are you just saying that because you think you need to get us out of here?

[There is more rumbling.]

SCOTT

(emotional)

Gear up. Give me a second here. Just…go.

[Chloe and Eli move back to the edge of the corridor.]

SCOTT

(into radio, quietly)

Look, Greer? I'm sorry, man.

[He moves back to the others. More of the ceiling collapses behind him.]

SCOTT
Go. Move, move, move. This thing's coming down.

INT—GREER HOME

[Greer as a young boy is inside a closet. Cans like a pantry are on shelves behind him. The door has slats so some light from the room outside shows through. Shadows of people walking past show. Voices can be heard.]

ANGELA
Please. The boy has to eat.

GREER'S DAD
No, don't you go near there!

ANGELA
You gotta let him out.

GREER'S DAD
I don't got to do nothing!

ANGELA
Aw, come on.

[There is a thud and the sound of dishes smashing.]

GREER

(quietly)

Mom?

GREER'S DAD
The boy has to learn.

[Greer awakens to find himself pinned amongst rocks. He feels his forehead.]

GREER
Hello? Hey! Hey, you guys, can anybody hear me? I'm here!

[He coughs and reaches for his radio.]

GREER

(into radio)

Scott, this is Greer, come in. Come in…

[He smashes his useless radio against the rock in despair.]

INT—CAVERN EXIT

[The three reach the exit, a ladder to the surface. The kino still floats in front of it.]

ELI
Hey, at least the tremors have stopped. Probably got far enough from the cave-in.

[Eli takes the kino and puts it in his pack. They all pause, staring at each other. Scott looks despondent and listless.]

ELI
I'll go.

[Eli starts up the ladder. Chloe slowly follows. Scott stares back into the tunnels, biting his lip.]

INT—CAVE COLLAPSE

[Greer moves stones one at a time, digging himself out. He flashes back to when he was a boy, laying brick upon brick in order while his father sits in a lawn chair drinking beer.]

EXT—GREER YARD, DAY

GREER
Done.

[His father continues drinking and doesn't react.]

GREER

(louder)

Done!

[Greer's father gets up from his chair and moves over to the neat brick wall. He takes his foot and kicks over his son's effort, staring at the boy.]

INT—COLLAPSED CAVERN

[Greer pauses, remembering his father's face in the memory. Then he continues moving the rocks one at a time.]

INT—GREER KITCHEN

[Young Greer and his mother, Angela, sit at the kitchen table. Angela pours him some milk.]

ANGELA
He wasn't always like this.

GREER
You say that all the time.

ANGELA
He was a good man, good father. You were too young to remember.

GREER
I hate him.

ANGELA
It's not his fault.

GREER
Don't care.

ANGELA
You need to be strong. I know you got it in you. He needs us. Both of us. Nobody else is going to take care of him.

GREER
We need to go.

ANGELA
Where?

GREER
Far away. Both of us. We need to get out of here.

INT—COLLAPSED CAVERN

[Greer crawls through the small hole he has made, choking on the dust as he works his way through, finally breaking out of the collapse.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, DAY

[Eli, Chloe, and Scott reach the Stargate in the forest grove. Eli starts to check the remote for addresses.]

SCOTT
Eli, hold up a second.

ELI
What?

INT—COLLAPSED CAVERN

[Greer crawls completely out of the collapse, looking around and the moving swiftly down the corridor.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET STARGATE, DAY

SCOTT
I'm saying maybe the thing to do is stay put. If it is possible to connect the dots between here and Destiny, then Colonel Young is going to send a team back to look for us. Maybe we'd be better off waiting for them to find us.

ELI
We don't know how long Destiny is going to stop for. If it's a short window, there-there might not be enough time for them to get here, and then to gate back to Destiny? We need to take the chance.

INT—CAVE CORRIDOR

[Greer pauses at a map of the cave, spotting a chalk mark of an arrow pointing the right direction to take. Greer continues to run, following the markings.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, DAY

SCOTT

(after a pause)

Okay, dial it.

INT—CAVE EXIT

[Greer reaches the ladder to the surface. He adjusts his rifle to be strapped against his back and starts to swiftly climb.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, DAY

[The Stargate is active. Eli looks at the remote monitor to view the kino's video of the next world.]

ELI
It's hard to see. Looks pretty foggy. But everything else is good. It's safe to go.

EXT—RUINS PLANET, FIELD, DAY

[Greer runs flat out through a field.]

INT—GREER MASTER BEDROOM

[Greer sits on his parents' bed, looking through photographs of his father in uniform with some of his unit, smiling and mugging for the camera. There is also a medal in the box. Greer smiles as he looks at the items. Greer's dad opens the door to the room and discovers his son. He picks up the pictures and the box, and throws them against the bureau. Then he pulls Greer to his feet by the shirt and drags him out of the room.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, DAY

SCOTT

(nodding)

Yeah.

[Eli and Chloe head through the Stargate as Scott looks back.]

EXT—CITY STREETS, NIGHT

[Greer's father drives the family's Chevrolet sedan through some of the streets. The young Greer looks nervously out the window as they drive further into a very poor area of town. Sirens sound nearby and people shout at each other. Greer's father puts the car into park.]

GREER'S DAD
Get out.

[Greer looks at his father, puzzled.]

GREER'S DAD
Get out!

GREER
I don't have any money.

GREER'S DAD
Probably be a good thing down here.

[Greer unbuckles his seat belt and gets out of the car. His father drives away, abandoning him.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, DAY

[Chloe has paused by the event horizon.]

CHLOE
Matt?

[Scott nods. He pauses a moment more, then follows.]

WORMHOLE EFFECT

EXT—JUNGLE PLANET, DAY

[The trio arrive on a foggy, jungle world.]

ELI
Uh, it'll take a minute for the 'gate list to refresh.

SCOTT
If Destiny is in FTL, it won't show up, right?

ELI
Right.

SCOTT
So shouldn't we be spending a little more time on these planets, waiting to see if it does?

ELI
What if it is out of FTL, but just one planet away from here?

SCOTT
See, I knew this was a bad idea.

ELI

(with wry chuckle)

Weren't you the one who said we should stop being so negative.

SCOTT
Ten minutes! We give each planet…

[There is the distant noise of something very large moving through the jungle and growling.]

ELI
You hear that?

CHLOE

(whispering)

Of course we heard it.

SCOTT
Dial the 'gate.

ELI

(nervously)

I'm dialing.

CHLOE

(frightened)

Dial faster.

ELI

(panicked)

I'm dialing. I'm dialing!

INT—RUINS PLANET, DAY

[Greer runs through the field and up to the forested area where the Stargate is. He looks around and sees no one. Realizing he has been deserted, he looks defeated.]

EXT—JUNGLE PLANET, DAY

[The roars grow closer in the foggy jungle as Eli finishes dialing.]

SCOTT
Eli!

[The twenty-foot-tall, bipedal, reptilian creature with huge teeth stomps into visual range, roaring at them.]

ELI
Holy…

[Eli and Chloe start running.]

SCOTT
Go! Go!

[Eli and Chloe run through the Stargate as Scott provides cover fire for their escape. He runs as well. The creature roars.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, NIGHT

[Greer warms himself by his makeshift fire and remembers his childhood.]

EXT—GREER HOME

[Young Greer has reached his home on foot; he hears glass shattering and sees a fire burning inside the back of the house.]

GREER
Mom! Mom!

[He runs toward the house.]

INT—GREER HOME

[Greer runs into his parents bedroom, pulling on his unconscious mother as his father sleeps alongside. He tugs her insistently.]

GREER
Mom, mom! Mom, Mom! We have to go! Mom, wake up!

[He drags her out of the house. She coughs weakly once he gets her outside as an explosion rocks the house. The boy looks back at the house.]

GREER
Mom! Mom!

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, NIGHT

GREER'S DAD
You should've let me burn.

[Greer turns to see a hallucination of his father, sitting in a lawn chair and nursing a beer, sitting next to him.]

EXT—DESERT WORLD, NIGHT

[Rush and his team arrive through the 'gate. The Stargate platform is on a vista surrounded by desert canyons.]

JAMES
It's beautiful. Not that I'd want to be stuck here for a long time, but is an incredible sight to see.

[She takes the kino from where it hovers.]

RUSH

(distractedly)

Yes.

JAMES
This is our tenth planet. We have less than an hour and a half left.

RUSH
This is a lot more complicated than I'd anticipated. Who would've guessed that Destiny had skipped over so many planets with 'gates on them?

JAMES
Getting back should be much quicker though.

RUSH
Yes.

JAMES
Well, we have extra kinos and a remote. Maybe it's time to split up, cover more planets.

RUSH
Agreed.

JAMES
We're going to find them. We just need a bit of luck.

RUSH
I'm afraid I don't believe in that.

JAMES

(exasperated)

So you'll take one team, and I'll take the other?

[Rush doesn't respond, just turns back to the Stargate and begins to dial. James rolls her eyes.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, NIGHT

[Greer sits nervously by the hallucination of his drinking father. Another man, only a voice at first, appears behind Greer as another hallucination.]

MAN
The fires…the fires were everywhere. That oil burned hot. Got so we forgot what a clean breath of air felt like that. Emphysema, asthma, bronchitis. They said none of the guys sent in to put out the fires showed any ill effects. Come on! You buy that? How can that be true? Those fires were everywhere!

GREER'S DAD
The man's a living hell. Sent by the devil himself….

INT—VA HOSPITAL WARD

[Greer is no longer a young boy. As a teen, he sits by his father's hospital bed. He looks as he does as an adult but his hair is much longer. His father has burn scars on his face. The man Greer has hallucinated by his campfire is another patient who paces the ward nervously.]

GREER'S DAD

(continuing)

…to torture me for all eternity.

MAN
Just a little skin reaction, they said. Just a little itchy on the arm. The FDA approved it even though it had never been through any serious large-scale trials. There were no side effects. They said it was the war! Not the vaccine. Between 1998 and 2000, twenty-thousand soldiers had to be hospitalized after receiving the vaccine, even though they had never been deployed oversees. The Pentagon failed to report that to Congress. Wasn't as bad as the sand fleas, though. They got under your skin and how. Carried all kinds of diseases. Diseases you can't even say. Tank busters. Uranium depleted. I loaded those munitions.

[Uncomfortable, Greer gets up to move to the other side of his father's bed. He looks down at his father with pity.]

MAN

(continuing)

Nothing dangerous coming out of those. What do you think? Eighteen thousand times in two years those alarms went off. It's not the mustard gas, never the mustard gas. It was cigarettes. Deodorant! Can you believe that? Chronic fatigue. Loss of muscle control. Headaches, dizziness, memory loss. Shortness of breath. Brain cancer.

GREER'S DAD
I'm going to kill him. Put him out of his misery.

MAN
It was the war. It was the war! It wasn't the fires. They were everywhere. Big black billowing smoke. The war is why he can't breathe!

[The man's pacing has drawn him close to Greer's father's bed and he points his fingers at Greer's dad. Greer's dad shoves and knocks the man back. He leaps out of bed and starts attacking the man on the floor, beating him in a rage. Greer grabs his father and pulls him back, keeping a hold on him. Greer's father eventually snaps out of the rage, starting to weep and whimper.]

INT—INFIRMARY

[Young enters. TJ has been pacing.]

YOUNG
Hey, TJ. Listen, I'm sorry. One thing turned into another, and the next thing you know, a five minute update is…

TJ

(interrupting)

I'm pregnant.

[Young stares at her, stunned for several moments. She is teary-eyed.]

YOUNG
You're pregnant?

[She nods, sighing. He steps closer to her.]

YOUNG
How-how far along are you?

TJ
About twenty-two weeks. It's y-yours. Ours.

YOUNG
A baby. On this…ship…

[He looks to her as if questioning her.]

TJ

(upset)

I'm keeping it.

YOUNG
No, I didn't…I didn't say you shouldn't.

TJ
What are you saying?

YOUNG
Uh…

[He approaches her and takes her hands, caressing them and kissing them. Tears fall from her eyes.]

YOUNG
We're gonna, we're gonna make this work. That's what we're going to do, we're going to make it work. Okay?

[She gives a small relieved smile and leans against him. He still looks shocked.]

EXT—DESERT SANDSTORM PLANET, DAY

[Eli, Chloe, and Scott are trapped in a bad sandstorm. They have bandanas over their noses and mouths.]

ELI
Uh, this is a problem.

SCOTT
What?

ELI
Uh, the kino says the atmosphere on the planet we just sent it to is toxic. We can't go through.

CHLOE
Which means we can't get that kino back.

ELI
And we won't know if the next address we try is safe.

[The Stargate shuts down.]

SCOTT
Dial another one.

ELI
But I-I just said that…

SCOTT
I know, I know, but we can't stay here, can we?

ELI
No, no. But I-I…

SCOTT
Then you stay. I'll go. I'll go. I'll radio back if it's safe.

CHLOE
Matt, Matt, no!

SCOTT
Look, if we stay here, we're as good as dead anyway. Dial another one.

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, NIGHT

[Greer lies next to the campfire. This time, Greer's father's burns are clearly visible in the hallucination.]

GREER'S DAD
They left you. Abandoned you.

GREER

(insistent)

They did what they had to do. They thought I was dead.

GREER'S DAD
Nobody's going to save you. Nobody cares. In the end, all there is, is you. You alone.

INT—VA HOSPITAL INTENSIVE CARE

[Greer enters a private room where his father is hooked up to several machines, unconscious. Angela sits by his side. Greer sits next to his mother.]

ANGELA
Doctor says there's an infection in his brain. They say there's nothing they can do for him.

GREER
I enlisted.

ANGELA
What'd you go and do that for?

GREER
I didn't get the scholarship.

ANGELA
But you worked so hard.

GREER
Wasn't fast enough. You always said it wasn't his fault. His choice wasn't wrong. He just wanted to be somebody. I wanna…be somebody.

ANGELA
You don't have anything to prove to anyone. You didn't let him change you. Nothing can hurt the spirit God gave you…

[Greer stands.]

GREER
I have to use it, don't I? To make a difference.

[She stands and hugs him.]

ANGELA
You can still change your mind.

GREER
I'm not going to.

INT—WINTER EVERGREEN PLANET, NIGHT

[Scott warily steps through the Stargate. Snow is falling gently down on the grove of evergreen trees around the Stargate. Scott slips on the snow of the ramp, falling on his butt.]

SCOTT
Oof!

[He looks around some more, his weapon raised.]

SCOTT

(into radio)

All right, I'm okay. It's, uh, cold and dark. But I can breathe, and there's no crazy dinosaurs. At least not yet. Come on through.

[Chloe and Eli arrive, taking off their bandanas.]

CHLOE
Wow.

ELI

(slipping and skidding)

Whoa.

CHLOE
It's kind of pretty. Sometimes we would spend Christmas at a cabin in Vermont.

ELI
Amazing…that a planet on the other side of the universe can remind you of Vermont. Okay. Here we go. The next set of addresses. Oh, God…

CHLOE
What?

ELI
I recognize this one.

SCOTT
One we've been to before?

ELI
Not recently.

CHLOE
That's not good.

ELI
It's the one with the downed alien ship—the…the planet Rush was stranded on. We've been heading the wrong way.

[They stand for a moment in silence, absorbing the news.]

SCOTT
Okay, so what now?

CHLOE
Uh, can we retrace our steps?

ELI
Wait…no. W-we should go to this planet.

CHLOE

(flabbergasted)

Why?

ELI
Look, even if we retrace our steps and try this all again with different choices, we're traveling blind. Rush said he was able to boot up the computer on that alien ship.

CHLOE
Yeah, and that's what brought the aliens.

ELI
Yes, but in the small time that he was there, he was able to glean some information about the shape of this galaxy and where the Stargates are. If-if I can do the same, we won't have to stumble around. W-we'd have a map.

CHLOE
Okay, but…what about the aliens?! Believe me, you do not want to end up a prisoner on one of those ships.

[Scott sighs and looks around.]

ELI
I realize we might not have much time. We'll have to get in and out quickly.

CHLOE

(ominously)

If they're not there now.

[They both turn to Scott, who looks at the night sky, his expression indecisive.]

EXT—RUINS PLANET, STARGATE AREA, NIGHT

[The Stargate powers up. Greer quickly puts out the campfire and takes cover behind a tree. He waits, weapon at ready. James and her team come through warily. Greer lowers his weapon.]

GREER
Lieutenant.

[He comes out from his cover, keeping his hands visible so as not to spook them. James looks at him in relief, then sees his expression and that he's alone. She frowns.]

EXT—DESERT PLANET WITH ALIEN SHIP, DAY

[The trio trudge to the wreckage of the alien ship.]

CHLOE
I hope this is a good idea.

INT—ALIEN SPACESHIP

[They enter the wreckage.]

SCOTT
All right, come on.

[They all start searching the darkened ship.]

SCOTT
Hey, Eli? How about this?

[Eli moves over to a console Scott's found. He spots Rush's glasses on the floor and picks them up.]

ELI

(chuckling)

Huh. Guess we're in the right place.

SCOTT
Well, I didn't see any other alien spaceships, did you?

ELI
Heh.

SCOTT
Come on, clock is ticking.

ELI
I know, I know.

[Eli starts pressing buttons. Some consoles come to life and sparks crackle.]

SCOTT

(nervously)

Fifteen minutes!

ELI
Where'd you get that number?

SCOTT
I like it.

ELI
This is an alien spaceship.

SCOTT
Right. Exactly. Fifteen minutes. That is it. End of discussion.

[Eli sighs and gets to work.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny floats in normal space.]

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[Young grins and greets James's returning team.]

YOUNG
Nice work, Lieutenant.

JAMES
Thank you, sir. Any word from Rush?

YOUNG

Not yet.
(to Greer)

I'm glad you made it back.

[They clasp hands.]

GREER
Yes, sir.

[Greer looks uncomfortable.]

YOUNG
Sergeant?

GREER
They thought I was dead. I don't think they would've left me otherwise.

YOUNG
I just hope that choice doesn't mean we've lost them.

[Young smiles and walks away; Greer remains, looking very serious.]

INT—ALIEN SPACESHIP

[Eli keeps pulling up different images on the holographic screen.]

ELI

(frustrated)

None of this makes any sense!

SCOTT
Okay, time's up. We need to walk away.

ELI

(insistent)

Not yet. Wait!

[Chloe joins him at the console.]

SCOTT
You just said…

ELI
I know! I know!

SCOTT

(continuing)

… "none of this makes any sense", Eli.

CHLOE
Go back.

ELI
What do you mean?

CHLOE
The screens. Go back.

[Eli complies.]

CHLOE
There! Select that.

[He does and a map of the galaxy shows up, marking some of Destiny's old path.]

ELI
There it is.

SCOTT
How did you know that?

CHLOE

(nonplussed)

I don't know.

[Eli records the information on the kino remote.]

ELI
Can you read this?

CHLOE
N-No, I, uh, I just…

SCOTT
…know what it means?

CHLOE
Look, can you use this to get us back to Destiny, or not?

ELI

Uh, yes?
(more confidently)

Yes, I think so. We have to hurry, though.

SCOTT
Why?

ELI
If I'm reading this right, then Destiny is about to leave the galaxy. If we don't get back on board before it does, we're going to be stranded for good. Game over.

[They quickly leave the space ship.]

INT—DESTINY CONTROL ROOM

[James's team, Greer, and Young wait with Riley in the Gate Room.]

JAMES

(concerned)

Five minutes.

EXT—FORESTED PLANET, DAY

[Scott, Eli, and Chloe run full speed out of the Stargate and pause to catch their breaths.]

SCOTT
Okay…Seriously…there was no quicker way?

ELI

(checking kino remote)

No. If I'm right, this planet should be just…there it is! Ha ha! Destiny!

SCOTT
Dial, dial, dial!

ELI
Okay!

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[The Stargate dials with an incoming wormhole.]

YOUNG
Down to the wire.

RILEY
Incoming wormhole.

[They wait expectantly as the 'gate dials.]

EXT—FORESTED PLANET, DAY

[Eli and Chloe laugh in relief as the Stargate dials.]

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[The Stargate activates. Rush and his team come through.]

YOUNG
You cut it close.

RUSH

(spotting Greer, relieved)

Greer.

YOUNG
And the others are not with him.

[Rush looks concerned.]

EXT—FORESTED PLANET, DAY

[The Stargate makes a strange alarm, then shuts down.]

SCOTT
What happened?

ELI
I don't know. It-it didn't connect.

CHLOE
Why not?

ELI
I don't know.

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[The Stargate shuts down.]

RUSH
So where are they?

EXT—FORESTED PLANET, DAY

SCOTT
Dial it again. Dial it again!

ELI
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.

[Eli starts to dial.]

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[Rush goes to Riley's panel. Everyone sadly watches the clock countdown to zero.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny jumps into faster than light.]

EXT—FORESTED PLANET, DUSK

[The Stargate aborts the dialing sequence again.]

SCOTT
What happened?

ELI

(studying remote)

I said I don't…oh…god.

CHLOE
What?

ELI
The address just disappeared.

SCOTT
How can it be there one second, and then gone the next?

ELI
They jumped. We missed it. We must've just…missed it.

[He sits, crestfallen.]

ELI
That's it. We're done.

[Chloe gasps. Scott looks around as if there is another option.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny flies faster than light.]

INT—CORRIDOR

[Riley controls a kino with a remote as he follows Greer through the corridor. The kino records their progress. Greer is ignoring Riley as he walks.]

RILEY
I'm trying to carry on for Eli. Don't you think he'd want me to? I mean, I think it's important. Look, I know you've been through a lot. I only need a minute or two. What happened on the planet? People are going to want to hear your story, you know?

INT—GREER'S QUARTERS

[Greer enters his chambers then turns and faces Riley. Riley reads the expression on his face.]

RILEY
Maybe another time.

[Greer closes the door on Riley. He sits on the footrest of his bed. He sighs and drops his head in mourning.]

FADE OUT
