Maj. Kevin Marks

Summary

Marks is a United States Air Force bridge crewmember of Earth's starships, having served on the Prometheus, the Odyssey, the Apollo, and the Daedalus.

Character Biography

Lt. Marks was a crew member of the Prometheus and, using the spaceship's Asgard scanners, was instrumental in finding the underground storehouse of treasure left by Myrrdin (Merlin) of the Ancients in the Glastonbury Tor (9.01 "Avalon Part 1"). Sometime before the Prometheus's final mission, Marks was promoted to Captain. He was one of the survivors of the Prometheus's destruction, although he injured his arm during evacuation. (9.15 "Ethon")

Remarkably, Marks was at the rank of Major when he served on the maiden voyage of Earth's newest Daedalus-class starship, the Odyssey (9.16 "Off The Grid"). He was on the bridge of the Odyssey during the Ori's first wave of their invasion of the Milky Way Galaxy (10.01 "Flesh and Blood Part 3"). He also was present on the Odyssey when the Lucian Alliance attempted to capture the ship (10.09 "Company of Thieves"), and played a key role in getting the ship back into the SGC's hands after Col. Emerson was executed by Alliance rebels. Later, he served on the mission under the new commander of the Odyssey, Col. Davidson, to destroy a stockpile of weapons grade naquadah meant to be used against Earth by the Illac Renin, an Ori-worshipping faction of the Free Jaffa (10.18 "Family Ties").

Marks was present on the Odyssey when the Asgard gifted their legacy and upgraded the starship with high-performance plasma weapons that could bypass the shield on Ori warships and destroy them (10.20 "Unending"). He played a key role in combating the reprogrammed first generation Replicators that were created aboard the Odyssey by the IOA as a weapon against Ori warships (Stargate: The Ark of Truth). Trapped inside the Asgard Core room with Col. Samantha Carter, he scanned the code line-by-line to find the subroutine that would deactivate the Replicators and stop them from destroying the ship. Fortunately, all ended well and the Odyssey returned back to Earth safely.

He was then reassigned to the Apollo under Col. Abraham Ellis during the Stargate Program's eleventh year. Apollo was assigned to serve the Atlantis base in the Pegasus Galaxy, and Marks was given a spot on the bridge crew. He was serving on the Apollo after it was upgraded with Asgard plasma weapons and during the Battle of Asuras, when the Pegasus Replicators' homeworld was destroyed. (Stargate Atlantis: 4.11 "Be All My Sins Remember'd Part 2")

Following that tour of duty on the Apollo, Marks was next assigned to the Daedalus under Col. Steven Caldwell (Stargate Atlantis: 5.01 "Search and Rescue Part 2"). He was involved in the rescue of Atlantis personnel who were trapped in the rubble of one of Michael the Wraith's strongholds. After everyone was rescued, including Teyla, who was trapped on Michael's command cruiser, Marks was given the order to "make that ship go away," an order he gladly executed.

Marks continued in his assignment on the Daedalus and was on the same trip from Earth to Atlantis that Dr. Daniel Jackson was on. Dr. Jackson had been doing research into the secret lab of the Ancient scientist Janus (the one who built a time machine in a puddle jumper). While the crew of the Daedalus were working with a Wraith ally nicknamed Todd, a rogue group of Asgard who had broken away from their brethren 10,000 years ago captured McKay and Jackson because they had inadvertently tripped a signal that Janus' Attero Device was available for reactivation. This device was meant to destroy Wraith ships as they entered hyperspace and as soon as Todd witnessed two of his ships destroyed, he captured the Daedalus because he felt betrayed. Marks was among some of the crew who managed to escape to regain control of the ship. He tried his best to override the Wraith's reprogramming of the ship's navigational systems that had set the ship on a collision course with the planet that housed the Device, but lacked the time to successfully do so. The ship and crew were saved when Col. John Sheppard extended the hyperspace window of the Travelers' ship he was in to include the Daedalus and stopped the ship from crashing into the planet by making the ship effectively pass through it instead. (Stargate Atlantis: 5.10 "First Contact Part 1", 5.11 "The Lost Tribe Part 2")

Still assigned to the Daedalus, Marks was among the crew when the ship engaged an upgraded Wraith hive ship that was using one or more ZPMs to improve its hull and hyperdrive. This hive had the ability to get to Earth and the Daedalus was the only ship in Pegasus at the time to engage it. The hive entered hyperspace toward Earth after leaving a severely crippled Daedalus behind. Remarkably, the city-ship Atlantis was able to engage the hive over Earth after it was given several ZPMs to power its journey (as well as the use of a long-abandoned wormhole drive for near-instantaneous travel like what is done through a Stargate). Daedalus remained in Pegasus, while the entirety of the Atlantis Expedition had been relocated on Earth in the Pacific Ocean. Atlantis is currently Earth's only line of defense because the Ancient weapons platform from Antarctica was destroyed by the "superhive" and the Apollo and Sun Tzu were greatly damaged on the edge of the Milky Way in their attempt to stop the superhive from reaching Earth. The Odyssey was far away on a secret mission when the Wraith attacked. (Stargate Atlantis: 5.20 "Enemy at the Gate")
