SG teams are usually composed of four members, but some units have been known to have more or less. Each team is designated as SG-x, where x is the unit number. Some SG teams are designed for specific functions, such as first contact, military backup, engineering, archaeological expeditions, or diplomacy.

Initially, in the pilot episode, 1.01 "Children of the Gods Part 1" and 1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2," there were nine SG teams. By the episode, 10.05 "Uninvited", there were at least twenty-five.
