Destiny

Summary

The Destiny was built by the Ancients millions of years ago when they were at the height of their civilization in the Milky Way. Before they launched the ship from Earth, they sent out automated starships to plant Stargates on inhabitable worlds farther and farther from home. The Destiny was meant to be boarded by explorers, but when the plague swept through the galaxy, the Ancients turned their attention toward ascension, the shedding of the physical form to live on as pure energy. The Destiny continued on its automated course unmanned until the evacuees of Icarus Base in the Milky Way input the nine-chevron code (discovered in the Ancient Database in Atlantis) that led them directly to the Ancient ship no matter where it was in the universe. The ship has much damage after all of this time, operating at less than 40% of its power capabilities when its reserves are fully charged (Stargate Universe: 1.06 "Water"). Over 80% of the ship is not accessible due to damage or system failures (Stargate Universe: 1.07 "Earth"). The stranded crew is gradually discovering various technologies and making repairs to the basic systems needed for human survival (Stargate Universe: 1.09 "Life" and others).

Technology

Stargate
Stargate - The Stargate on Destiny has 36 symbols like the Pegasus Stargates, but these symbols are not constellations because the Destiny travels through multiple galaxies. The range of the Stargate is limited, but it does have the capability to dial Earth if it has enough power to do so. Since the power reserves on the ship cannot be fully recharged, dialing Earth is next to impossible. There are no Dial Home Devices (DHDs) on the planets where seeder ships planted Stargates before Destiny, but travelers have the ability to dial the Stargate with a hand-held remote that is also used to interface with the Kino. The Destiny gives explorers at least 12 hours to visit each planet and resumes its FTL course once those hours are up. This particular model of Stargate spins in its entirety, rather than having an inner spinning ring like the Milky Way 'gates. Faster-Than-Light (FTL) Engines
Faster-Than-Light (FTL) Engines - The Destiny has 12 faster than light engines, as opposed to the hyperspace and wormhole drives of Atlantis. Since the crew cannot access the main systems, they are unable to break the ship out of its preprogrammed course to follow the seeder ships that have planted Stargates on planets before it. The crew, however, is able to force the ship to drop out of FTL if they put in a request for basic survival necessities and Destiny determines that an upcoming planet meets their needs. The ship will also drop out of FTL whenever it needs to recharge its reserves by traveling through the corona of a star. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")
Database
Database - The Destiny has a large database concerning the ship's travel history. The transparent monitor screen is similar, if not identical, to the one found in the weapon room on Dakara and the ones found in Atlantis. The database contains information about each planet on which a Stargate was placed by the seeder ships that were launched before Destiny. Dr. Nicholas Rush was the first to access the database and discovered what the Ancients had named the vessel. He also found out that the Ancients never boarded it. Ancient Shuttle
Ancient Shuttle - There were at least two shuttles docked to the Destiny, but one was damaged and had to be sealed from access. The second shuttle, however, is fully functional. Once loaded with supplies, it can seat 17 passengers, but if not fully-loaded, it can seat more. Thus far, Col. Everett Young and Lt. Matthew Scott have successfully piloted this small craft. Larger than the Puddle Jumper, the Ancient Shuttle cannot fit through the Stargate. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Kino
Kino - The Kino (Russian for "cinema"), so named by Eli Wallace after Russia's Kino-Pravda in the 1920s, is a floating camera ball that records like a video recorder and has night vision lenses and environmental sensors. Eli discovered the kinos in a room dedicated to their creation, storage, and control. The kino has an automatic patrolling mode, but can be used as a communications device through the use of a hand-held remote control. Dr. Rush assumed the kino's purpose was to be sent through the Stargate to gather environmental data before explorers set foot on the planet, much like how Stargate Command uses MALPs. Not only does Eli have expert control over the Kino's programming, but he also has become the ship's documentarian, recording messages and off-world missions. Col. Young has also instructed Eli to use the kino to spy on people in order to determine if they are planning to rally against his command. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Air Scrubbing System
Air Scrubbing System - This cylindrical tank holds several gallons of a solution based on calcium carbonate and is used as part of the ship's air supply system to scrub out carbon dioxide in the air. Upon its discovery, the liquid that the Ancients used had become goop that clogged the system. While an away team went to a planet to find lime, a group of engineers took apart and cleaned the filtering system. It took two men to lift and replace the tank, which occupies a chamber with an automated sliding door. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Recharging Plate
Recharging Plate - Discovered and so named by Sgt. Hunter Riley, this device recharges the batteries in the crew's Terran technologies that they managed to bring with them during their hasty evacuation of Icarus Base. They have battery-powered flashlights and lanterns, radios and stereo equipment, laptop computers, long-range communication devices, and many other technologies that they need during their daily operations. Rather than several minutes or hours, it takes mere seconds for a battery to be recharged. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.04 "Darkness")
Shower
Shower - Shower units are located near the crew quarters in the section of the ship that the stranded Earthlings inhabit. Eli Wallace discovered and studied this unit and determined that it didn't use the water from the tank from which they were rationing their drinking water, but instead it sprayed a warm gel in mist form. Chloe Armstrong was the first of the crew to use the unit. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.04 "Darkness")
Ancient Space Suits
Ancient Space Suits - Several of these suits were discovered on the Destiny. The suits have been used primarily to access areas of the ship that have no atmosphere and to visit planets that have toxic atmospheres or extreme subnormal temperatures. Dr. Lisa Park leads the team who prepare these suits for use. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.06 "Water"; a modified version was seen being used by the Asgard in the Pegasus Galaxy in Stargate Atlantis: 5.10 "First Contact" and 5.11 "The Lost Tribe")
Energy Cannon Weapons
Energy Cannon Weapons - There are several of these energy blasting cannons on the Destiny and their control systems are accessible to the crew. They require a lot of power to operate, something the scientists on Earth counted on when they wanted to force the Destiny to recharge so that they could channel the solar energy being harvested through the ship into the Stargate to attempt to dial Earth (their first attempt failed). (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.07 "Earth")
Ancient Chair Interface
Ancient Chair Interface - A precursor to the Ancients' Repository of Knowledge, the interface technology in this chair is designed to transfer the knowledge of the Ancients into the user's mind. Dr. Rush leads the team in studying the interface, hoping to retrieve the information it contains without risking a person's life since the similarly-designed Repositories do not work well on humans (eventually, the downloads are fatal). Rush also hopes that they'll be able to find the codes to unlock the Destiny's navigational systems so that they can begin the process of returning home. Dr. Jeremy Franklin felt that the Interface was so important that he risked his life to sit in the Chair, a decision that left him in a deep catatonic state. Compartments

Stargate Room
Stargate Room - This large chamber has two curved staircases that lead up to the upper levels of the ship where the shuttle docks. There are at least two interface consoles situated directly across from the Stargate, and several corridors lead into the room. This room is used as the main assembly area whenever all of the crew must gather for important announcements. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")
Corridors
Corridors - There are several corridors inside the Destiny. One particular set, however, has been mapped out by Lt. Matthew Scott to be a running course for helping the crew remain or get in shape. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1"; first seen as a track, 1.09 "Life")
Observation Deck
Observation Deck - This spacious room has bench seats, chairs, tables, and a telescope and provides the ship's passengers with an incredible view of what lies ahead. During FTL, the windows are lit with blue streaks of light. When the Destiny is not in FTL, passengers can see the rest of the ship's front and outerspace spread before them. Dr. Nicholas Rush first found the room and sometimes uses it as a quiet place to work on his laptop computer. The room is also sometimes used for small group gatherings and for yoga. Control Interface Room
Control Interface Room - Dr. Nicholas Rush found this room that acts as a central control center for the Destiny. There is a large computer core in the center of the room that links to various systems aboard the ship. Two standing consoles give users access to the systems and database. The large database monitor is in this room as well. Rush has discovered that the ship's main functions, such as navigation, are password protected and he has yet to break the code. He has discovered, however, that the Destiny predates the Ancients' use of the technology activation gene to limit access to certain critical technologies. Kino Room
Kino Room - This room harbors the creation, storage, and main control interface technology for the kinos. Eli Wallace found this room and moved into it as his personal quarters. From this room, Eli programs the kinos for their various missions and reviews and edits the data recorded in each. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Private Quarters
Private Quarters - Each person has their own personal quarters that look like modest hotel rooms, complete with a platform bed with linens and nightstand. Certain rooms have windows. Not all members have taken rooms in the quarter section of the ship, however; Eli Wallace bunks in the kino room. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Mess Hall
Mess Hall - Airman Darren Becker runs the ship's mess hall, having had the same kind of position on Icarus Base. Armed soldiers guard the scant food supply, which Becker must measure carefully to ration. Not all 80+ members of the crew eat at the same time, but rather, each meal is served in sessions twenty minutes apart. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.04 "Darkness")
Col. Young's Office and Quarters
Col. Young's Office and Quarters - Col. Everett Young was the commander of Icarus Base and as such, took command of the Destiny. The room he found to set up his office and quarters includes a table, chairs, and comfortable cushioned seating, as well as the usual platform bed and night table. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.04 "Darkness"; revealed as also being Young's quarters, 1.10 "Justice")
Young measures water level and finds it running short
Water Storage Room - The Destiny has a closed water supply system that is kept separate from the waste reclamation systems. Direct access to the tank is carefully guarded. One of the problems that the crew first faced was a water shortage and they found that part of their problem was that alien lifeforms were gaining access and depleting the supply. The supply was replenished with water found on an ice planet, but even after getting approved as potable, there were micro-organisms that caused sickness and death. The supply had to be reprocessed to remove the contamination. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.06 "Water")
Ancient Space Suit Storage Room
Ancient Space Suit Storage Room - Dr. Lisa Park and other scientists oversee the maintenance of the space suits that the Ancients had left aboard Destiny. The room is near the 'Gate Room so that travelers have easy access. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.06 "Water")
Communication Stone Room
Communication Stone Room - The stranded crew on the Destiny have set aside a small room for using the long-range communication stone devices that scientists on Earth fashioned after Ancient technology. These stones create psychic links between users at both ends (a matching set of stones and a console are in the communications lab at Homeworld Command on Earth). Once the one-to-one link is made (a maximum of five links at a time), the users effectively swap bodies with each other so that those stranded on the Destiny are able to visit their loved ones back home, even though they are in someone else's body. Normally, the links are discontinued through a control on the console, but whenever the Destiny disengages or engages its FTL engines, the links are temporarily interrupted. Infirmary
Infirmary - As the only person with some medical training, Lt. Tamara Johansen, a medic from Icarus Base, runs the ship's infirmary. She must carefully distribute the small supply of medications that the people brought with them during the evacuation. So far, no Ancient healing technology has been discovered. (First substantial appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.08 "Time")
Multi-Purpose Room
Multi-Purpose Room - Whether there is one room or many being used, the multi-purpose room has functioned as an exercise room and as a court room. Furniture is pushed to the side to provide ample room for calisthenics sessions. (First appearance as an exercise room: Stargate Universe: 1.09 "Life"; first appearance as a court room, 1.10 "Justice")
Hydroponics Lab
Hydroponics Lab - Began by Dr. Jeremy Franklin, the hydroponics lab is meant to provide food and proper nourishment for the stranded crew. Seeds were brought from Icarus Base and most likely other types of plants have been harvested from the various planets visited by the crew. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.09 "Life")
Interface Chair Room
Interface Chair Room - This room was at first inaccessible to the stranded crew, but after being on the ship for a little while, Dr. Rush led the teams that worked on making more parts of the ship capable of supporting life without the use of space suits. The center of the room is occupied by the Ancient Interface Chair, a technology that is the forerunner to the Repository of Knowledge in its function: to transfer information into the mind of the person using the device. Several computer consoles are also in this room. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.09 "Life")
Bridge
Bridge - Dr. Rush discovered the bridge and kept its location a secret so that he could have it all to himself and thus ultimate control of the ship. Consoles on the bridge permit access to the ship's navigation, something that the crew was at the mercy of when they first boarded. (First appearance: Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Aftermath")

Damaged Areas

Domed Room
Domed Room - This large domed room can be seen also from the exterior as damaged. Scott's scouting team marked the doors with a large "X" to indicate that they had visited the room and it was unsafe to enter. (Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")
Damaged Shuttle
Damaged Ancient Shuttle - Destiny had two Ancient Shuttles attached to it when the Icarus crew boarded, but only one was immediately usable. The damaged shuttle had a huge gaping hole in the front of its cabin, but because it was attached to the Destiny, it was using the ship's air supply and defense shield. The defense shield was compromised and air was leaking out. The only way to seal the leak was to close off the shuttle, but so much damage had been done to the docking mechanism that the door could only be closed from within the shuttle itself. Senator Alan Armstrong closed the door and died there, and his body remained there until the stranded crew decided to repair the shuttle. They were able to get it partially operational, and it was given to a group of civilians who decided to stay behind on a planet that appeared to have been created for their benefit. These civilians also hoped that the unseen and unmet highly advanced creators of this planet were on their way to help them after a large obelisk, the only sign of advanced technology, began to emit a signal. An explosion in a corridor leaves Riley severely injured
Damaged Corridor - It was in this corridor that Sgt. Riley was injured. The corridor didn't have atmosphere, so Riley and Dr. Brody had to access it using the Ancient Space Suits. Riley attempted to fix a coolant leak, but it exploded, severely injuring him. (Stargate Universe: 1.06 "Earth")
