When Lt. Matthew Scott was four years old, both of his parents were killed in an automobile accident. As an orphan, Scott was raised by a Roman Catholic Priest. This Father's influence in his life made Scott focus on becoming a priest himself, but personal failures made the young man feel unworthy. When Scott was about to succumb to the heat of a desert planet, he hallucinated and had flashbacks that centered around this Priest. According to Scott, the Priest also had failures in that he drunk himself to death when Scott was 16 years old.
