Without us, the Goa'uld are nothing. We are their strength, we are their power…until we choose to serve them no more. I was witness to the final breath of Apophis. I watched him tremble with fear for what lay beyond. I believed that day would be honored for all time on Chulak. But instead, I see Jaffa taking up arms against one another. I see cowardice and I am ashamed. This is our time, it will not come again. But first we must grow stronger, as the people of the Tau'ri have done. I call for warriors to join me through the Chappa'ai, to gather weapons, to forge alliances with other Jaffa who seek freedom. To show the Goa'uld we will do battle with them wherever they may be. Who will join me?" (3.01 "Into The Fire Part 2")

==Early Seeds of Rebellion==

Master Bra'tac, former First Prime of Apophis, had a father who once told him a story about a place feared by the Goa'uld (3.20 "Maternal Instinct"). The story was about the planet called Kheb:

The Goa'uld fear and despise Kheb. They forbade anyone from speaking of it long ago. It is something my father once spoke of to me. An old tale about a place discovered long ago by a few Jaffa and kept secret from the Goa'uld. When they could no longer carry a primta, they would make their journey to Kheb. There their calak would learn the path through the darkness into the next life. When some of the Goa'uld finally found out about Kheb, they made their way there. They did not return. It was forbidden to speak of ever again. My father enjoyed telling me this story. If the Goa'uld truly are all-powerful gods, he would say, how is it that they fear anything?

The fact that Jaffa reached Kheb was remembered, but the actual location of the planet was not. It was only through the comparing of the Jaffa stories and Earth's myths that Master Bra'tac and Dr. Daniel Jackson determined that the planet Kheb was the same planet to which Osiris fled from Seth in the Lok'na Core. They found Kheb (P9C-292) among the planets placed in the computer database when Col. Jack O'Neill had the Ancient knowledge downloaded from a Repository of Knowledge, meaning that this planet was not known to the Goa'uld, but to the Ancients who originally built the Stargate network. The Ancient ties to the planet remained strong as the Ascended Being Oma Desala was still present there, offering the Path to Enlightenment, or ascension, to anyone truly willing to open his mind to it. (2.16 "The Fifth Race", 3.20 "Maternal Instinct")

Although some Jaffa served their "gods" in the Goa'uld, they still longed for an afterlife that was not promised by them. One such group of Jaffa, the Sodan, served under the Goa'uld Ishkur. For years, they pillaged and plundered under his name. The further they rose among Ishkur's ranks, the more they realized that Ishkur was not a god at all, but merely an imposter. The Sodan determined the true gods were those that came before them, namely the Ancients. Ishkur branded the Sodan traitors and ordered their deaths. They tried to fight and convert other Jaffa, but the odds were too great, and they were forced to flee. They set out to find Kheb, hoping that their souls would find peace. Instead, their search led them to P9G-844. (9.08 "Babylon")

Although they soon realized this world was not the Kheb of legend, they discovered the Ancient technology that would keep them hidden and perhaps help them on the Path to Enlightenment. They continued to worship the Ancients as gods and lived on the planet for 5,000 years, occasionally conducting raids to obtain new primtas (larval Goa'ulds). They would also leave the world to trade for food and other goods and grew their own crops in the village. Resentful the other Jaffa had not joined them when they first rose against the Goa'uld, they considered the Jaffa's affairs none of their concern and considered them inferior warriors. (9.08 "Babylon", 9.18 "Arthur's Mantle")

There was a rebellion, only a few generations before Teal'c's, against the Goa'uld Montu on the planet Chulak now remembered as the Battle of Tazek'sur. A memorial marks the spot where several Jaffa gave their lives and caused their sons, such as Gerak, former First Prime of Montu and future leader of the Free Jaffa Nation, to question 'what god is so deserving of my worship?'" (9.03 "Origin Part 3", 9.11 "The Fourth Horseman Part 2")

With fathers such as those of Bra'tac and Gerak, the doubt in the godhood of the Goa'uld was passed on. Their sons and certain warriors under their training were chosen to keep the hope of freedom alive. Master Bra'tac trained Teal'c until he became a First Prime, telling him that he could make a difference in his new, powerful position: "When Apophis throws his armies into the fire you will be there to temper his sword. And in so doing, you may save countless lives as I have done in my time. His will can be made to bend, but not always. I have done deeds for which I cannot forgive even myself. As will you. Men such as you and I have only the comfort of those times we make a difference." (5.02 "Threshold")

Jaffa wear the mark of their Goa'uld master on their foreheads, indicating both their allegiance to their gods and their separation from other Jaffa. These warriors fought each other in battle and were not able to join together to form any large rebellion as long as certain System Lords remained in power. When the Tau'ri joined in the fight against the Goa'uld, they inspired Teal'c because they had lived in their freedom from the Goa'uld for thousands of years (the Goa'uld Ra was defeated by a rebellion of the Ancient Egyptians in the year 2995 B.C.). After Teal'c met Col. Jack O'Neill, Capt. Samantha Carter, and Dr. Daniel Jackson, he realized that the time to act against the Goa'uld and to follow the Tau'ri's example had finally come. (1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2", 3.01 "Into the Fire Part 2", 5.02 "Threshold", 8.20 "Moebius Part 2")

==The Jaffa Rebellion==
===Early Days===
Teal'c's treason against Apophis caused some changes to be made among the Jaffa still serving under the System Lord. Teal'c's wife and son were banished, and his home, a gift from Apophis himself, was burned. Apophis even embedded a recall program into his Death Gliders in case a Jaffa stole it in rebellion. It wasn't until Teal'c witnessed Apophis's death that he felt he had the opportunity to call his fellow Jaffa to rise up against the Goa'uld by helping his teammates on SG-1 escape from Hathor's captivity. Very few joined him that day, but the stage was set as Teal'c bridged the two societies by remaining on SG-1 as they fought by example against the System Lords. (1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2", 1.12 "Bloodlines", 2.17 "Serpent's Song", 3.01 "Into the Fire Part 2", 4.12 "Tangent")

Turning a Jaffa into a Rebel Jaffa was done on an individual basis most of the time. Master Bra'tac trained young warriors, like Moac, while Teal'c convinced individuals, such as Rak'nor, through the strength of his personal convictions, especially during torture. When Moac died because of Apophis's senseless slaughter of his Jaffa on Chulak while searching for his son, a Harsesis, Bra'tac nearly gave up the fight, feeling that he was too old to continue. He was renewed when he found Kheb and saw the hope that Oma Desala brought to his people in the afterlife. (3.20 "Maternal Instinct", 4.13 "Serpent's Venom")

===Alliances and Struggles===
The number of Rebel Jaffa grew as System Lords fell at the hands of the SGC, Tok'ra, and each other. The Rebel Jaffa allied themselves with the SGC and Tok'ra, forming the main opposition against the Goa'uld. One joint venture was started by the Jaffa Priestess Shaun'auc who believed that she had turned her symbiote against the Goa'uld while she still carried it in her pouch. Teal'c was ready to leave SG-1 so that he could help Shaun'auc convince other symbiotes still being carried by Jaffa to turn from the Goa'uld and join the Tok'ra. Shaun'auc's symbiote, Tanith, tried to deceive everyone that he had turned. Once he took a host, he killed Shaun'auc because she had dared to touch his mind. The Tok'ra knew of Tanith's treachery and used him to feed misinformation to the Goa'uld System Lords (at first, Apophis, then Anubis). Teal'c had the final satisfaction of killing Tanith to avenge his true love's death, but the number of Tok'ra wasn't increased like they had hoped. (4.04 "Crossroads", 4.22 "Exodus Part 1", 5.09 "Between Two Fires", 5.14 "48 Hours")

Another set-back the Rebel Jaffa faced was when they thought they had found a new leader in Kytano. He gathered a significant number of Jaffa from various System Lords at Cal Mah, and sent his loyal followers on suicide missions, promising the peace of Kheb. When Teal'c was sent on a mission to Lord Yu's planet, the System Lord told him of Kytano's deception: Kytano was actually the Goa'uld Imhotep! Teal'c killed Kytano, Cal Mah was destroyed in an air strike by Yu's forces, and the Rebel Jaffa had to evacuate through the Stargate with SG-1's help. (5.18 "The Warrior")

Teal'c was both saddened and uplifted when the fight against the Goa'uld "lost one of its greatest warriors" — Daniel Jackson was killed by radiation poisoning, but was helped to ascend by Oma Desala herself (he had impressed her when the team found Kheb). Teal'c believed that Daniel had managed a great achievement in ascending, something that Rebel Jaffa had placed their hope in doing if they died for their cause. (3.20 "Maternal Instinct", 5.21 "Meridian", 5.22 "Revelations")

The Rebel Jaffa were called into action to save their allies of Earth when Anubis began to attack the planet through its Stargate, sending an energy beam with an Ancient device that would eventually cause the Stargate to explode with catastrophic effects. Rebel Jaffa Shaq'rel obtained a cargo ship to transport himself, Bra'tac, Teal'c, and Rya'c to the weapon's home, where they successfully destroyed the technology, but not before Earth had to remove their Stargate from the SGC base so that it would explode far away in outer space. This was the second Stargate found on Earth, retrieved from the ice in Antarctica. The Russians had the Giza Stargate and leased it to the SGC for them to continue the Stargate Program. Anubis had attacked Earth several times before, his promise to the System Lords for allowing him back into their High Council. He had also engineered the destruction of the Tok'ra base at Ravanna, greatly reducing their numbers. (5.15 "Summit Part 1", 5.16 "Last Stand Part 2", 6.01 "Redemption Part 1", 6.02 "Redemption Part 2")

At first, Teal'c's wife Drey'auc resented the Rebel Jaffa's cause because it left her without the status that having a husband as a First Prime afforded both herself and her son. She went so far as to marry another Jaffa, Fro'tak, but he was loyal to Apophis and supported Apophis's brainwashing of Rya'c to get to Teal'c. Jack killed Fro'tak before he could reveal Teal'c's whereabouts. When it came time for Drey'auc to receive another symbiote after hers matured, she refused. She died free, honoring the Rebel Jaffa's cause (their battle cry was "shel kek nem ron" — loosely translated, "I die free"). (2.08 "Family", 6.01 "Redemption Part 1")

Anubis learned of the Tok'ra's hidden base in the Risa System and attacked it (6.09 "Allegiance"). The Tok'ra didn't know that there was a cloaked Ashrak, a Goa'uld assassin, in their midst when they escaped to the Alpha Site, already the home to Rebel Jaffa and some SGC personnel. The Ashrak attempted to set the Jaffa and Tok'ra off on each other by expertly killing a Tok'ra who had been seen arguing with a Jaffa. Tension grew between the two groups as the Jaffa charged with the crime, Artok, continued to claim innocence, but failed in the Tok'ra's lie detector test. While Artok was confined to a cell, the Ashrak killed him. Master Bra'tac found the Ashrak's tracks and the Tau'ri, Tok'ra, and Jaffa divided into groups of three to find him. Bra'tac was seriously injured, but later made it back to the camp as they surrounded the assassin and finally killed him. Bra'tac spoke eloquently, attempting to unite the three groups once more:

This single blade did what we could not. It has brought us together. This blade has spilled the blood of Jaffa, of the Tok'ra, and of the Tau'ri. By the hand of our common enemy, it has made us brothers. Together, we have ensured it will never spill our blood again.

Upon the discovery of the Goa'uld Egeria, the mother of the Tok'ra, and the drug Tretonin developed by the people of Pangar that used her young offspring as a main ingredient because of their healing effects, the Tok'ra realized that they could help their Rebel Jaffa allies by producing a drug that could act as the Jaffa's immune system and eliminate their need for carrying a Goa'uld symbiote. Master Bra'tac and Teal'c were the first to try out the new drug after 106 Rebel Jaffa were massacred and their symbiotes removed in the ambush of Kresh'tar. Afterwards, the drug was offered to the female Jaffa warriors of the Hak'tyl, who had been raiding Jaffa patrols and taking their symbiotes for their children who needed them to survive once they reached puberty. The Hak'tyl was run by a priestess of Moloc named Ishta, and after realizing that she might have been killing her fellow Rebel Jaffa, such as Ryk'l, in these raids, she accepted the offer to switch to Tretonin. One of her lieutenants, Mala, died in the transition, but several others survived, including Ka'lel, Neith, Nieth's young sister Nesa, and Rya'c's bride Kar'yn. (6.10 "Cure", 6.19 "Changeling", 7.10 "Birthright", 8.09 "Sacrifices")

Daniel Jackson returned to human form after having been ascended for about a year. His memories were buried and he didn't know who he was, but Oma Desala saw to it that he was reunited with his team. They took him home and he started to remember his life before his ascension, but very few of his ascended memories returned. There was one significant memory that proved to be very important to Rebel Jaffa, and especially to Teal'c: Bra'tac and Rya'c had gone Erebus, a labor camp for Ba'al's enslaved Jaffa, in order to recruit for their cause and were caught. Daniel had witnessed their capture while he was ascended, but was prevented from acting because of the non-interference rules of The Others (Ascended Ancients). The memory came back to Daniel while he was meditating, and he, along with Rak'nor and SGC personnel, designed a mission to recover them. They freed the entire camp and gained more Jaffa for the Rebellion. (7.04 "Orpheus")

More set-backs in the Rebel Jaffa's cause came in the form of a new type of soldier created by Anubis: the Kull Warrior. These soldiers were manufactured beings blended with programmed symbiotes and had one-track minds in their service to Anubis. They were highly focused assassins who wouldn't stop until they were dead. Adal, a Rebel Jaffa in service to the minor Goa'uld Ramius, helped the SGC capture one of these Warriors for interrogation. They discovered that Anubis had thousands of these Warrior on Tartarus. The Tok'ra and Tau'ri developed a weapon that could be used against these Warriors at the Alpha Site, but Anubis learned of this and sent a couple of his Warriors to find and destroy the weapon. The Alpha Site was destroyed after its commander initiated the self-destruct. The Rebel Jaffa lost eight members in the explosion; the Tok'ra, five; and the Tau'ri, the remaining of the seventy missing. Friction mounted between the Tok'ra and the Rebel Jaffa because each of them accused the other of leaking the location of the Alpha Site to Anubis. M'zel was the Rebel Jaffa leader who testified in the investigation. (7.11 "Evolution Part 1", 7.12 "Evolution Part 2", 7.16 "Death Knell")

Both the Tok'ra and the Rebel Jaffa decided to leave the Beta Site after the Alpha Site was destroyed. M'zel stated his reasons:
We are not leaving because of the Tok'ra. We are leaving because it is what we must do. On your base, you dictate the terms. We must consult you before we take any action. There are those among us who feel we simply traded one master for another. Unlike the Tau'ri or the Tok'ra, the Jaffa are still learning what it means to be free. In order to do this we must have our own bases, train our own leaders, build our own communities. We must do this for ourselves or it would have no meaning. Only then can we be equal partners in any alliance.

Teal'c might have been emotionally affected by the Rebel Jaffa's exodus from the Beta Site. When he was testing a virtual reality program designed to train SGC personnel in a foothold situation instigated by Kull Warriors, he wasn't able to take the game's safe exit because the game sensed that he felt the battle wasn't over as long as not all of the Goa'uld were dead. Teal'c was able to beat the game when Daniel joined him, their victory complete because they did it together. (8.06 "Avatar")

For several decades, Ishta had been saving female infants from the ritual fires that Moloc established to control his Jaffa population. Encouraged by her increased numbers once she joined the Rebel Jaffa, Ishta pushed for the overthrow of Moloc to prevent more senseless slaughter, but Teal'c warned her that the time was not right for her to eliminate one Goa'uld so that another could absorb his domain and army and thus grow stronger and deadlier. Teal'c believed that they needed to grow in number before attempting such a public act. Ishta didn't heed Teal'c's advice, and she called a summit to plan the operation, but the summit was ambushed by Moloc and his loyal Jaffa. Teal'c and Aron, one of Ishta's new Rebel Jaffa friends, managed to kill Moloc with missiles sent through the Stargate by the SGC. This elimination of Moloc won more Rebel Jaffa, including Cha'ra, Moloc's First Prime, but as Teal'c feared, Ba'al absorbed the dead Goa'uld's domain. (8.09 "Sacrifices")

In a massacre as detrimental as the ambush at Kresh'tar, a large camp of Rebel Jaffa on P4S-161 was killed with the use of symbiote poison. This poison, designed by the Tok'ra and manufactured at Area 51, killed the symbiote quickly, causing it to release its deadly toxin that killed its host or Jaffa as well. The Earth rogue organization called The Trust released the poison through the Stargate to planets thought to be in Ba'al's domain, but their information was outdated, resulting in the needless deaths of Rebel Jaffa and Tok'ra operatives. The actions of The Trust put further strain on the Rebel Jaffa's relationship with their allies. M'zel was killed by the poison, his last words being, "I die free." (8.10 "Endgame")

===Victory===
Nearly six years after Teal'c made the call to his brothers and sisters to fight for their freedom, the Rebel Jaffa achieved their goal — the System Lords were vanquished and their Jaffa armies were freed. This victory had many facets and the war was fought on several fronts.

Ba'al's greed for power caused a war among the System Lords, and Bastet and Olokun were killed, Morrigan capitulated, and Lord Yu and Amaterasu attempted to rally their armies for their last stand. What Ba'al and the others didn't know was that the Replicators, under the leadership of Carter's duplicate, were on their way to conquer the galaxy, with the Goa'uld as their primary target because of their advanced level of technology. Additionally, no one knew that Anubis had returned to the scene with Ba'al acting as his lieutenant. (8.13 "It's Good To Be King", 8.16 "Reckoning Part 1")

The Replicators immediately attacked and killed the last remaining System Lords who sat on the Goa'uld's High Council, including Lord Yu. They then began spreading throughout the galaxy, attacking and taking control of every ha'tak they encountered. Anubis and Ba'al sent a great mass of their fleets to fight the Replicators, but the battle was extremely one-sided because the Replicators were relentless. (8.16 "Reckoning Part 1")
The Rebel Jaffa saw the opportunity to forever discredit the Goa'uld as gods when Ba'al sent some of the ha'tak that normally guarded Dakara, the holy place where the first Jaffa was implanted with a symbiote, to fight the Replicators, leaving the planet open to attack. They took control of the temple with hardly a fight because they had greater numbers. The battle to keep Dakara, on the other hand, was the greater challenge. (6.16 "Reckoning Part 1")

Ba'al worked under Anubis in their fight against the Replicators, but when he found out that Anubis planned to use the powerful weapon hidden on the planet, he decided to ask for the Tau'ri's help. Amazing as it seemed, he kept them informed of what Anubis was doing and asked for help in ridding them of the Replicators because he knew that the Tau'ri had helped the Asgard several times in the past. He also decided to stall his fleet's arrival to Dakara, even though the Rebel Jaffa had taken control of the temple there. This stalling tactic was to give the Tau'ri time to find and destroy the weapon. (8.16 "Reckoning Part 1", 8.17 "Reckoning Part 2")

Once Lt. Col. Samantha Carter and Jacob Carter/Selmak opened the entrance to the control room of the Ancient weapon, they were prepared to destroy it using a naquadah reactor. When Jacob/Selmak discovered that the weapon's technology was capable of emitting an energy wave set on a frequency that would only destroy the Replicators and leave other living things alone, they decided to use it instead. Because the Replicators were connected to each other through a subspace link, Carter recruited Ba'al to help them program the Stargate on Dakara to dial every other Stargate in the galaxy simultaneously so that the Replicators wouldn't have time to adjust to the new frequency — they'd hit all of the Replicators at the same time. (8.16 "Reckoning Part 1", 8.17 "Reckoning Part 2")

Ba'al began to help the Carters to set the console panels to the correct frequency, but had to leave when his ship lost life support on several levels. His ship was under attack by the Replicators, who had heard about the weapon on Dakara from a probe of Daniel Jackson's subconscious mind after he was captured by Replicator Carter during a Rebel Jaffa operation to obtain more recruits and ships. She had hoped that he might hold Ancient knowledge from his time ascended, and, as it turned out, she found that he not only had information about Dakara, but also held all of the Ancients' knowledge. She was distracted by her greed and Daniel took advantage of the knowledge she was unburying and the distribution commands she was sending to her "brethren" (the bug-like first generation Replicators) to take control of all of the Replicators. He froze their progress and prevented Replicator Carter from issuing a counter-command long enough for the Carters to calibrate the weapon. Those few seconds of control helped to save the entire galaxy from the Replicators' destruction. As soon as she could, Replicator Carter killed Daniel, but it was too late for her because by that time, Jacob/Selmak matched the frequency and hit the button on the weapon. All Replicators throughout the galaxy were destroyed. (8.17 "Reckoning Part 2")

The Rebel Jaffa boarded Ba'al's ha'tak and attempted to gain his surrender, but he beamed out of the ship to some unknown location. Ba'al's escape left his fleet and Dakara in control of the Rebel Jaffa, where they used the temple as a ceremonial place once more. This time, the ceremony was to honor Master Bra'tac and Teal'c for their leadership in realizing the Jaffa's freedom. One of the high priests, Tolok, performed the ceremony, much like a knight's tapping ceremony where he used a staff weapon instead of a sword, and declared that Bra'tac of Chulak and Teal'c of the Tau'ri were blood brothers to all Jaffa. Everyone in attendance bowed before them, but Bra'tac announced that from that moment on, no Jaffa would bow down to anyone. Bra'tac and Teal'c then stepped out of the temple to see a mass of Jaffa assembled in the courtyard between the temple and the Stargate. It was their day, one for which they had fought for so long. (8.18 "Threads")

The high priests suggested that Bra'tac and Teal'c take seats on a High Council in order to establish a new nation (8.18 "Threads"). Bra'tac urged Teal'c to stay with the Jaffa during these first critical stages of growth. He recognized that they had many challenges ahead of them:
So consumed were we in attaining freedom, that we did not plan nearly enough for its aftermath. The Jaffa have fought with each other for so long that uniting them as one may prove as difficult a task as convincing them to free themselves from the Goa'uld. Generations of war and mistrust will not be healed overnight.

Unfortunately, the Jaffa's newly-won freedom was immediately challenged by one more powerful enemy — Anubis. (8.18 "Threads")

Rebel Jaffa Leader Teal'c

Summary

Teal'c called his fellow Jaffa to freedom from the Goa'uld and many answered, forming what was referred to as the Jaffa Rebellion. The Rebellion lasted six years, and the Free Jaffa Nation was formed as a result of the fall of the System Lords.

Teal'c's Call

"The Goa'uld are not gods. It is a lie we live each day. Only when he takes a host does a Goa'uld become strong. Even then, only as strong as the Jaffa who serve him.

Early Seeds of Rebellion

The Jaffa Rebellion

Early Days

Alliances and Struggles

Victory

Notable Characters

Alliances

 • Tau'ri - Teal'c introduced his fellow Rebel Jaffa to the humans of Earth. The Rebel Jaffa used the safety of the Alpha Site for several years, but later decided to strike out on their own.
 • Tok'ra - The relationship with the Tok'ra had always been strained, because when the Tok'ra were killed, "it was always a Jaffa at the other end of the staff weapon." However, through the efforts of the SGC, the Tok'ra and the Jaffa made some progress in their relationship. The Tok'ra also left the sanctuary of the Alpha Site to return to their ways of subterfuge because their numbers grew less with the aggressive behavior against the Goa'uld practiced by the Rebel Jaffa and Tau'ri. One major thing that the Tok'ra did for the Jaffa was to modify Tretonin for the Jaffa, aiding them in the end their dependence on the Goa'uld for their very lives.

Enemies

 • Goa'uld - The Goa'uld were the former "masters" of the Jaffa, having created them to incubate their young in abdominal pouches. The Goa'uld enslaved millions of Jaffa across the galaxy, but most of these Jaffa didn't have a choice because they had been taught from childhood that the Goa'uld were their gods.
 • Replicators - The Replicators were everybody's enemy because they consumed worlds without regard for the lives they extinguished. Right after the Rebel Jaffa gained control of Dakara, the Replicators attacked in order to destroy the Ancient weapon there.
