There have been two ocassions in which an airlock has been vented. Coincidentally, it was Airlock 3 which was vented on both of these ocassions.
There have been two occasions in which an airlock has been vented.

When Col. Frank Simmons stole the ''Prometheus'' in order to go to a planet thought to have a cache of Ancient weapons, he coordinated his efforts with the Goa'uld who had taken the billionaire Andrian Conrad as a host (5.11 "Desperate Measures"). This Goa'uld and Simmons got into a fight on the bridge and Simmons killed Conrad. The symbiote jumped into Simmons and then went after Col. Jack O'Neill and Teal'c who had boarded the ship secretly through the lower bay with a death glider. In their struggle, Jack initiated a manual venting by entering the control sequence on a keypad to open the doors. Col. Simmons was sucked out into space. (6.11 "Prometheus")

The second ocassion in which the airlocks were mentioned was in the episode, 7.13 "Grace". Because of the nature of this episode, whether or not all events onboard the ''Prometheus'' were real or imagined by an concussed Maj. Samantha Carter is left to viewer interpretation. The use of the computer-controlled Venting Sequence was invoked by Carter as a way to move the ship which was stuck in a gaseous cloud. The venting of Airlock 3 failed, however, to break the ship free.

The Asgard installed their beaming technology (transporter system) in the ''Prometheus''. Because the Earth vessel was not equipped with the advanced sensors the Asgard used to pinpoint their targets, small remote transmission beacons, about the size of an automobile remote control, were used as locators. The use of locator beacons was introduced by the members of The Trust when they needed to transport to the al'kesh left behind by Osiris (7.15 "Chimera). One of their undercover operatives placed a beacon on the Stargate and The Trust beamed the Stargate out of the embarkation room. The ''Prometheus'' monitored the frequency of these beacons and used the transporter to retrieve the Stargate and SG-1 from the al'kesh and place them into the ship's cargo bay. (8.10 "Endgame")

The ''Prometheus'' crew adapted the use of the remote locator beacons into their standard operations of the beaming technology. They gave one of their beacons to Daniel Jackson when he was sent to Moscow to investigate why The Trust had been interested in gaining access to the minister of defense, General Kiselev, through former Vice President Robert Kinsey. Kiselev, as it turns out, was a Goa'uld, and SG-1 discovered that Kinsey had also been implanted with a Goa'uld. Daniel's life was placed in danger when Kiselev discovered that he was interrogating Kinsey's Goa'uld. Kiselev sent soldiers to apprehend Daniel, but Daniel used the locator beacon to escape from Moscow, along with Kinsey. In order for both of them to be transported, Daniel had to make physical contact with Kinsey (he put his hand on Kinsey's shoulder). The two men materialized on the bridge of the ship, indicating that the ''Prometheus'' crew were able to determine the size of the target and materialize it in an area of appropriate size. (8.10 "Endgame", 8.14 "Full Alert")

Summary

The Prometheus is a space-worthy battle ship created by the Air Force using Earth and alien technology. It was developed under the designation X-303, named the Prometheus after its maiden flight (6.11 "Prometheus"), and given the upgraded designation of BC-303 after it proved its capabilities (7.07 "Enemy Mine").

Mythological References

Prometheus (literally, "forethought") is one of the Titans from Greek mythology, son of Iapetus and Clymene. Zeus entrusted him with the task of making men out of mud and clay. Out of pity for their state, he gave them fire, stealing it from heaven, and was punished by being chained to Mount Caucasus, where an eagle preyed on his liver. He was finally rescued by Hercules. Real-World References

NASA has a Project Prometheus (Prometheus Nuclear Systems and Technology) which is the investigation into nuclear-powered spacecraft. Currently, solar power and chemical propulsion technologies are what drive our spacecraft. NASA, along with the Department of Energy's Office of Naval Reactors, is determining the possibility of developing a space nuclear reactor to supply future exploration spacecraft with a significant increase in on-board power and spacecraft propulsion capability. The goal is to see missions leave the solar system and to increase the knowledge gained from each mission.

History of Development

In the episode, 6.11 "Prometheus", Maj. Samantha Carter was approached by a television reporter named Julia Donovan concerning a secret multi-billion-dollar project being conducted in Nevada. Donovan knew about the alien metal Trinium and that the two-year-old project in Nevada was thought to be a fusion reactor. She was threatening to air her report, but a deal was worked out so that she would get an exclusive tour, but would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Carter told Donovan's film crew once they arrived at the site in Nevada, "All the key systems were reverse engineered from a ship that crashed 100 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1978. It was only in the last few years that our technology evolved to a point where we could take advantage of what we had."

The truth of this statement was questioned by Jonas Quinn and Carter said that "Fairbanks" sounded better than "Roswell". Carter also implied that the ship which was found in Fairbanks was of Asgard design.

Carter gave this story about the Prometheus to the news crew with the knowledge that the Air Force intended to destroy the taped footage of the tour. The news crew was under the impression that the footage would be kept by the government until it was deemed appropriate to reveal the existence of the spacecraft, giving Donovan the exclusive. The SGC was in effect operating a double cross in order to find the identity of Donovan's source.

Part of Carter's explanation about the Prometheus was true. She stated that it was the third in a series of designs that incorporated both human and alien technology. Major Paul Davis, when disclosing the Stargate Program to ambassadors of China, Great Britain, and France, stated the same thing. The X-303 was the third in the series, following the development of the X-301 and X-302 intercept fighter spacecraft (6.17 "Disclosure").

Up until this point, the alien technology only included that of the Goa'uld, but since then, the Asgard have added some of their technology as thank you gifts for helping them in the war with the Replicators (6.17 "Disclosure", 8.10 "Endgame", 8.11 "Gemini", 8.12 "Prometheus Unbound").

In the episode, 8.19 "Moebius Part 1", it was revealed that the Prometheus has a sister ship, the Daedalus, which has the advantage of being developed with the upgrades already in the design. Basically, Prometheus went through several upgrades and the Daedalus benefited from them.

Airlocks

Airlock 3 venting

Several airlocks line the slender mid-section of the ship. Airlocks may be vented through initiating a Venting Sequence controlled through the computer consoles (7.13 "Grace"), or performing a manual override to open the door via a control keypad (6.11 "Prometheus").

There have been two occasions in which an airlock has been vented.

When Col. Frank Simmons stole the Prometheus in order to go to a planet thought to have a cache of Ancient weapons, he coordinated his efforts with the Goa'uld who had taken the billionaire Andrian Conrad as a host (5.11 "Desperate Measures"). The second occasion in which the airlocks were mentioned was in the episode, 7.13 "Grace". Because of the nature of this episode, whether or not all events onboard the Prometheus were real or imagined by an concussed Maj. Samantha Carter is left to viewer interpretation. The use of the computer-controlled Venting Sequence was invoked by Carter as a way to move the ship which was stuck in a gaseous cloud. The venting of Airlock 3 failed, however, to break the ship free.

The Asgard installed their beaming technology (transporter system) in the Prometheus. The use of locator beacons was introduced by the members of The Trust when they needed to transport to the al'kesh left behind by Osiris (7.15 "Chimera"). The Prometheus crew adapted the use of the remote locator beacons into their standard operations of the beaming technology. (8.10 "Endgame", 8.14 "Full Alert")

Battle Complement

workinprogress.jpg

The Prometheus is designed to carry eight (8) F-302 space intercept fighters (6.17 "Disclosure"). The fighters are kept in the cargo bay and hanger area at the front of the ship (labeled as the forward cargo hanger in a display graphic from the episode, 7.13 "Grace").

We have not yet seen an F-302 exit or enter the Prometheus. However, a squadron of them assisted the Prometheus in the battle over the Antarctic when Anubis attacked Earth. Although capable of entering outer space, these F-302s intercepted the al'kesh and death gliders sent by Anubis above the ground as the Prometheus hovered over the enhanced cargo ship used by SG-1 to gain access to the Ancient Antarctic Outpost. Once the F-302s' weapons were depleted, they were recalled to McMurdo Station. (7.22 "Lost City Part 2")

Prometheus' maiden voyage

The Prometheus sits in a subterranean bay in Nevada where it was assembled and is maintained (6.11 "Prometheus", 7.22 "Lost City Part 2", 8.10 "Endgame", 8.12 "Prometheus Unbound"). It is held in place with large docking clamps (6.11 "Prometheus"). Access to the subterranean bay is given through an elevator housed in a shack surrounded by an electric fence (6.11 "Prometheus").

The Prometheus' maiden voyage was a result of a hijacking by rogue NID agents working with Col. Frank Simmons and the Goa'uld Adrian Conrad. They felt that it was easier to steal the ship than to gain access to the Stargate. Viewers were given an idea of the massive size of the ship when it rose from its bay. Even though it was not complete on the inside, the Prometheus performed extremely well on its first flight and proved its space-worthiness. (6.11 "Prometheus")

Bridge

The bridge of the Prometheus has stations of several types to support the ship's missions. In the front, right up under the observation windows, are several stations, mainly for battle situations. The commander sits in the center of three chairs which are situated in the bridge's front and center. The command chair has various controls, including communications, on the arms. On the commander's right there sits a helmsman, and on his left, the navigator. Behind these chairs is a star map. Large display screens adorn several of the walls of the bridge, the largest being directly opposite the door to the bridge, to the commander's left.

All of the systems for the ship are protected with control access codes (6.11 "Prometheus", 8.12 "Prometheus Unbound").

Briefing Room

workinprogress.jpg

Brig

Vala on floor in brig

Camera on ceiling of brig room

There appear to be at least five (5) isolation rooms designated as the brig. When Daniel Jackson was left alone on the Prometheus with the space pirate Vala, he confined her to one of the brig rooms. The room is quite generous in space and is equipped with a toilet and sink. There is a surveillance camera and microphone securely fastened to the room's ceiling. (8.12 "Prometheus Unbound")

Cargo Bay and Hangers

Venting Sequence display screen labels Forward Cargo Hanger
Death glider approaches lower cargo bay
F-302 intercept fighter

The cargo bay and hangers (most likely for the complement of eight (8) F-302 intercept fighters) are in the forward section of the Prometheus. This area is seen labeled in the Venting Sequence display screen as "Fwd Cargo Hanger" in the episode, 7.13 "Grace".

We've yet to see an F-302 enter or exit the Prometheus, but have seen a Goa'uld death glider make its approach to the lower cargo bay in the episode, 6.11 "Prometheus". Col. Jack O'Neill and Teal'c used a death glider from Anubis' crashed ha'tak (6.03 "Descent") to secretly board the Prometheus after it was stolen by a rogue cell of the NID under the leadership of Col. Frank Simmons. Their approach was possible because the radar systems for the Prometheus were not yet operational as the ship was still under construction when it was stolen.

The cargo bay was mentioned in the episode, 8.10 "Endgame", when it was used to hold the Stargate after the Stargate and SG-1 were beamed out of a Goa'uld al'kesh which was under the control of The Trust. The crew of the Prometheus intercepted a locator beacon signal in order to use the newly-installed Asgard beaming technology. The size of the object must have been determined by this beaming technology control systems because the Stargate would most likely not have fit anywhere else on the ship. The Stargate is 22 feet in diameter.

Communications

Crew and Crew Quarters

workinprogress.jpg

The size and composition of the crew vary based on the mission. The history of the crew and the Prometheus' missions are covered in a separate article entitled "Prometheus Crew".

The crew's quarters are located at the rear of the spacecraft, above the two large sublight engines (based on display graphics seen in the episode, 7.13 "Grace"). We have not yet seen the interior of one of these compartments.

Deceleration Thrusters

workinprogress.jpg

Decelaration thrusters are used to slow the Prometheus down. They were used by SG-1 when they landed on the planet Hala in the episode, 6.12 "Unnatural Selection".

Hull

workinprogress.jpg

The Prometheus has two hull layers, called the outer hull and the inner hull. It is possible for the outer hull to suffer damage, while the inner hull maintains the ship's integrity and life support. (7.13 "Grace")

When Daniel Jackson explained to the Unas clan leader Iron Shirt on the planet P3X-403 that the SGC needed naquadah to build spaceships, he most likely was referring to the composition of the Prometheus' hulls (7.07 "Enemy Mine"). The Goa'uld also use naquadah in the building of their spaceships (7.04 "Orpheus").

Hyperdrive Engines

workinprogress.jpg

The hyperdrive engines were first powered by the powerful, but highly unstable, mineral called naquadria (6.20 "Memento"), but then new hyperdrive technology was installed by the Asgard (8.08 "Covenant", 8.10 "Endgame", 8.11 "Gemini", 8.12 "Prometheus Unbound").

After successful testing of the Asgard hyperdrive (8.11 "Gemini"), General George Hammond gathered a crew together to go on a rescue mission to the Pegasus Galaxy to determine the fate of the Atlantis Expedition Team (dispatched in Stargate Atlantis: 1.01 "Rising Part 1"). During the trip, they picked up a distress call and attempted to help, but the Prometheus was hijacked by a space pirate named Vala. During the time that she had the ship, the hull was damaged by Goa'uld death gliders and because of this damage, the rescue mission had to be aborted because hyperdrive was not recommended with such damage.
