Gamma Base Command

Summary

The Gamma Base Command (Gamma Site) is an off-world site for the research of alien technology and lifeforms.

Planetary Features

Earth-like blue skies

The planet chosen for the Gamma Site is 24,000 light years away from Earth, but with the Stargate, is less than a second's travel away. It was selected for several reasons, including its unique radioactive ionosphere which makes it difficult to lock onto surface targets (such as the Stargate) from orbit. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Like most planets in the Stargate network, the planet appears Earth-like and can support human life. The area surrounding the base includes thick forests and rocky terrain, as well as a cave system about five miles out. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Personnel

Col. Pearson, Commander
Dr. Myers, Lead Entomologist
Dr. Pullman, Entomologist

Air Force Col. Pearson was the commander of the Gamma Site. He had previously served as the chief Air Force officer at the Stargate Command Base when Dr. Elizabeth Weir, a civilian, replaced Gen. Hammond as the commander of the facility. (8.01 "New Order Part 1", 9.17 "The Scourge")

Drs. Myers and Pullman were entomologists who were researching project R75, also referred to as the Prior Bugs. Other scientists known to have been present on the Gamma Site were Dr. Sharma, who was the facility's lead botanist, Dr. Toshiaki, who was conducting a magnetic resonance field study, and Dr. Santiago, who was conducting a study which included mealworms. (9.17 "The Scourge")

There were several military personnel assigned to the base, including the usual SFs and F-302 crews. (9.17 "The Scourge")

All members of this group of military personnel and scientists were killed when the Prior Bugs took over the facility. (9.17 "The Scourge")

The only survivors of the Prior Bug incident were the four members of SG-1 and the four International Oversight Advisory (IOA) members who were taking a tour of the base at the time. They first found shelter in the rocky cave system and then made it to the unnamed research station from where they were beamed to safety by the Odyssey. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Stargate Command built a U.S. military facility which supports the research of over thirty scientists engaged in ongoing projects at any given time. The base also has F-302s and several restricted areas because of its military nature. Typical of most Stargate Command facilities, the Gamma Site has a gateroom, various research laboratories (including a vacuum system to rid a room of hazardous materials), a cafeteria, and an infirmary (although this infirmary is not as well-equipped as that of the SGC). (9.17 "The Scourge")

The Gamma Site kept in regular contact with the SGC via the Stargate. Their gateroom was also equipped with a functioning DHD, surveillance cameras, and motion sensor technology. (9.17 "The Scourge")

There also exists an unmanned research station about 10 kilometers from the main facility. This station included communications equipment. It was to this research station that SG-1 and the member of the International Oversight Advisory (IOA) fled and from which they were rescued by the Odyssey through the use of the Asgard beaming technology. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Destruction

One of the research projects being conducted at the Gamma Site was R75, the study of an alien bug which was thought to have been left by the Priors of the Ori on planets which already had access to the cure to the Prior Plague. These bugs were designed to burrow into the soil and consume plants from the roots up. Dr. Myers, the lead entomologist, found that the lifespan of these bugs was extremely short, but could be lengthened through starvation. He also discovered that the bugs refused to eat vegetation after three days of starvation, but became carnivores in order to live on an alternate food source. These bugs could consume a man in mere seconds, leaving nothing behind. They also incubated their young in a human's body. (9.17 "The Scourge")

When Dr. Myers became ill after having been bitten by one of the bugs, Col. Pearson had him placed in a medical isolation pod to be transported through the Stargate to the SGC where the medical facilities were better suited to help him. As the SFs carried the pod, Dr. Myers's body convulsed and released thousands of the bugs. This startled the SFs and they dropped the pod and it opened, releasing the bugs into the gateroom. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Eventually, the bugs took over the base, killing everyone they encountered. They got into the computer systems and caused the self-destruct to detonate, destroying the majority of the base and the F-302s. Most likely, the Stargate was buried in the rubble. (9.17 "The Scourge")

Because of the ideal location for the site, once General Landry learned of the Gamma Site's situation, he issued the CR-91 protocol which called for the Odyssey to carry a poisonous payload to the planet to kill any living thing that remained and then salvage what they could from the site, presumably to rebuild it. The Gamma Site returned to operational status within the year. (9.17 "The Scourge", 10.03 "The Pegasus Project")

Second Gamma Site Facility

The second Gamma Site facility, most likely situated at or near the original site's location, was the closest off-world base to the site of the Ori's fully-functional Supergate (at the former location of P3Y-229 which had been collapsed into a micro-singularity). It was used by SG-11 to relay a message to Teal'c who was in an al'kesh monitoring the efforts of the crew of the Odyssey in the Pegasus Galaxy. The use of the Gamma Site in this instance saved the lives of the crew of the Odyssey, who then successfully activated the Supergate from a Stargate in the Pegasus Galaxy, thus eliminating the Ori's ability to send more warships through that particular Supergate. (10.03 "The Pegasus Project")

Specific personnel assignments to the Gamma Site are not known.
