Galar

Summary

Galar is a planet protected by the Asgard. It recently developed its own version of a Stargate program where it explores and tries to make alliances with the cultures it encounters. Experimenting with alien technologies, it modified a Goa'uld memory device to create a way to graft memories in the hopes of cutting down training time for highly skilled professions, such as surgeons and engineers. It was first introduced in the episode 9.12 "Collateral Damage".

Geopolitical Structure and History

Galar was home to a human population originally under the domination of the Goa'uld. Sometime generations past, it came under the protection of the Asgard. The Galarans were able to develop technologically. They discovered the use of the Stargate, which they called "the Ring" and used it to explore new worlds. The Ring Program was remarkably similar to Stargate Command, run as a classified military project. An Emissary met people from over a dozen worlds and realized that Galar was vulnerable to much more technologically advanced species who understood interstellar travel.

They also had alien artifacts found on Galar. Modifying a Goa'uld memory device, they were able to graft memories from one person to another, like an organ transplant. The hope was to copy the knowledge and experience of skilled professionals, such as surgeons onto other candidates, thereby cutting the necessary training to a fraction of the required time. By doing this, they hoped to make some leaps technologically to catch-up to the alien cultures they met.

As for other technology, there was electrical power, computer equipment, high rise buildings, transportation similar to automobiles and trains. At the time SG-1 visited the planet, the population appeared to live in a post-industrial/technological age similar to present day Earth. The area SG-1 visited was an urban center.
