Alternate Character: Lt. Fisher of SG-6 from 9.10 "The Fourth Horseman Part 1"

Senator Fisher

Summary

Senator Fisher is the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee during Season Nine. (9.04 "The Ties That Bind")

Character Biography

As Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, it is Senator Fisher's job to make sure that the American people's dollars are spent wisely. The Stargate Program is classified and not known by the public, appearing as Area 52 in the budget. Even so, Fisher's duty to the public is to make sure the Program does nothing but protect and serve the people. (9.04 "The Ties That Bind")

To this end, Fisher approved a major reduction in the amount of funds given to Stargate Command. The SGC was instructed to terminate new exploration and support only those activities which would allow for the building of ships like the Daedalus and for the support of the Atlantis Expedition. Gen. Landry, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c testified before the Committee to request that the reduction of activities of the SGC not take place (reduced to 30% of their former budget), citing the need to find new technologies and allies to fight the Ori, but the Senator dismissed their testimony as a desperate attempt to continue their control of the Program. The only choice given to Gen. Landry was to either live with the reduction or to seek out funding from international sources, but that would require a civilian watchdog to approve all the general's decisions.
