Earth's Daedalus-Class Ship

Summary

The first ship of the 304 line of Earth-built spaceships utilizing both Terran and alien technology was the Daedalus, and now all ships built under the 304 design are referred to as Daedalus-Class ships, or Deep Space Carriers. The prototype 303 program, embodied in the Prometheus, paved the way for this ship and all of its capabilities. (8.19 "Moebius Part 1", 9.16 "Off The Grid", 9.19 "Crusade Part 1")

Predecessor 303 Program

Although similar in capabilities, the Daedalus-Class ship appears to be far more powerful and larger than the Prometheus. Whereas the Prometheus had two large sublight engine thrusters, the Daedalus has two large and four small thrusters. Both are fitted with Asgard hyperspace engines, sensors, scanners, energy shields, and beaming technology. As a matter of fact, the Daedalus itself has an Asgard engineer assigned to the crew.

The Senate Appropriations Committee cut their financial support to the SGC in order to put more dollars into the production of the Daedalus-Class ships. The SGC now receives the majority of its funding from an international coalition called the "International Oversight Advisory" (IOA). Each member country of the Gate Alliance Treaty has a representative in the IOA and together they oversee the missions of exploration through the Stargate, as well as the military support of the internationally-manned Atlantis Expedition.

Daedalus-Class Ships

The Daedalus is assigned to ferry personnel between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies and defend the Atlantis base. That doesn't preclude the ship from performing missions within the Milky Way Galaxy, however. The ship is currently under the command of Col. Steven Caldwell. (Introduced in 8.19 "Moebius Part 1"; Stargate Atlantis)
The Odyssey is Earth's first line of defense, replacing the destroyed Prometheus. It was most likely not originally meant to be Prometheus's replacement, but has stepped into that role. Because it was Earth's only operational spaceship in the Milky Way Galaxy at the time of the loss of the Prometheus, the Odyssey not only had to defend Earth but also trek into deep space to rescue stranded personnel or to engage in battle. The U.S.S. Odyssey is currently under the command of Col. Paul Emerson. (Introduced in 9.16 "Off The Grid")
The third Daedalus-Class ship on the assembly line was given to the Russians as a trade agreement for the United States to continue running the SGC with the Stargate which is leased from Russia. The Russians named the ship, which had to be hurried through the last stages of production, the Korolev. Currently, the commander of the Korolev is Col. Chekov of the Russian Army who also serves as the Russian IOA representative. (Introduced in 9.20 "Camelot Part 2")
