Summary

From MGM: A Harvard educated aide to, and daughter of, Senator Alan Armstrong. Though privilege had gotten her through most of her life she has since made a choice to be more than another trust fund kid. Before Joining the Stargate Program

Chloe Armstrong had a privileged upbringing and obtained a political science degree from Harvard. She became an aide to her father, U.S. Senator Alan Armstrong of California, and was briefed on the Stargate Program because the senator was overseeing the financing of the Top Secret Icarus Project. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")

Icarus Project was focused on dialing a nine-chevron Stargate address that was found in the Ancient Database. A great deal of power is required to dial such an address, so most of the Project's first phase was spent searching for a planet with a naquadria core and then building Icarus Base to draw power from it. Dr. Nicholas Rush was the lead scientist on the Project, but he couldn't establish the proper mathematical equation to draw the power safely from the unstable core. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1", 1.09 "Life")

Chloe came up with the idea of inserting the problem into an online video game called Prometheus. She figured that if someone was able to solve the Dakara Weapons Puzzle, they'd be able to solve the Icarus power problem. Her idea was implemented and MIT drop-out Eli Wallace solved the problem. Soon, he found Lt. Gen. Jack O'Neill and Dr. Rush at his front door, offering him a position on the Project. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")

Chloe, her father, and Eli were invited to witness the dialing of the Stargate on Icarus Base. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")

Icarus Base and Destiny

Chloe and Her Father Gate to Destiny

Chloe with her father, Senator Alan Armstrong
Chloe, her father, and Eli were taken from Earth in the USS George Hammond to Icarus Base since the Base's Stargate could not receive incoming wormholes for safety reasons. While aboard the starship, Chloe and Eli had time to talk and to get to know each other, although Chloe was already well-briefed on Eli's background. Once they arrived at Icarus, they were greeted by Col. Everett Young, the base commander, and then they immediately went to witness the dialing of the address using Eli's formula, but the Stargate wouldn't lock. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1")

While Rush reviewed the data, the civilians were invited to have dinner with the Base's officers. Senator Armstrong wanted to toast Chloe for saving the Project, but she quickly interrupted him to praise the brave men and women who had volunteered to be members of Col. David Telford's team that was to go wherever the address led. Before she could complete her sentence, the base came under attack. Chloe and her father were temporarily separated when a portion of the corridor collapsed, but they were finally reunited in time to rush to the Gate Room to evacuate. Rush and Eli were finally successful in dialing the nine-chevron code, but the planet's core's instability prevented them from disengaging the wormhole to dial Earth. With the core about to go critical, Young had no choice but to order the evacuation through the Stargate to its mysterious destination. They ended up several billion light years from Earth in an Ancient starship called Destiny and there was not enough power to dial back home. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1", 1.02 "Air Part 2")

Chloe Connects with Others on Destiny

Chloe talks to Lt. Matthew Scott about her late father
The Destiny was not operating at its fullest and soon the air was growing thin. They determined that there was a hull breach that could only be sealed off with someone closing a door on the damaged side. Senator Armstrong, severely injured during the evacuation, volunteered himself, and Chloe witnessed his death. She took out her anger on Rush, but found consolation talking about her father with Lt. Matthew Scott, the young officer whom Young had put in command after Young was severely injured as the last man through the Stargate when the Base exploded. (Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2")

After Armstrong's sacrifice, the crew gained more time to solve their next problem: the carbon dioxide scrubbers needed calcium carbonate. Destiny picked out a desert planet that met the requirements for repairing the system, and Scott led a first away team. Scott nearly died getting back to the Stargate with the needed calcium carbonate, and Chloe went to his quarters to check up on him. Scott was orphaned when he was four years old and the Roman Catholic Priest who raised him died of alcoholism when Scott was sixteen, so he understood Chloe's pain of loss and grief. The two soon became lovers. (Stargate Universe: 1.02 "Air Part 2", 1.03 "Air Part 3", 1.05 "Light")

While Scott was on his mission to the desert planet, Chloe used the communication stones to visit her mother to tell her about her situation and the senator's death. The stones form a psychic link with someone using the stones on Earth and they effectively swap bodies, so when Chloe went to see her mother, she was in the body of someone else. Her mother didn't take the news very well and consumed several alcoholic drinks as an emotional crutch. She then turned her anger on Maj. Green, Chloe's military escort, and threatened to make the Stargate Program public if Chloe didn't return home safely. (Stargate Universe: 1.03 "Air Part 3")

Chloe is the first to use shower on Destiny
Eli found the ship's shower unit and Chloe was the first to use it. She asked him to keep guard outside the door for privacy, and when the lights went out due to loss of power, Chloe clung to him as if her life depended on it. Later, the two went to the observation deck together to watch as the Destiny passed by a gas giant. Chloe thanked Eli for asking her to go with him, for she appreciated the incredible beauty of the event.

When the Destiny appeared to be on a catastrophic collision course with a star, Scott was selected by Young to pilot the ship's only working shuttle to a nearby planet. Chloe's name was entered into a lottery to gain a seat on the small craft, but her name wasn't drawn. She and Eli shared what they thought would be their last moments alive watching the shuttle take off. As it turned out, Destiny normally harvested power from a star's corona to charge its reserves, so the shuttle was recalled and the ship resumed its preprogrammed course. (Stargate Universe: 1.05 "Light")

The next issue was finding potable water, and Scott again risked his life on the mission to an inhospitable ice planet. Lt. Vanessa James informed Chloe of Scott's perilous situation when he fell and got stuck in a crevasse. James herself had had a sexual encounter with Scott on the same day that Icarus was attacked, but she apparently realized that Scott and Chloe had become more deeply involved and showed Chloe the utmost respect. Fortunately, Scott returned to Destiny safely, but the water was contaminated and Chloe was one of the first to get sick. They found the cure in time on one of the next planets they visited, but it was a very close call. (Stargate Universe: 1.01 "Air Part 1", 1.06 "Water", 1.08 "Time"; Kino 1.18 "A New Kind of Crazy")

Chloe again got to use the communication stones to visit her mother, and this time, Eli used the stones to visit his mother as well. The two kept in touch over the phone, and Chloe invited Eli to go with her and some of her friends to a night club. Chloe told her best friend Celina that she was Chloe's cousin Liz, and Chloe was able to keep up the ruse until she saw that Celina was dating Chloe's ex-boyfriend Josh. Chloe was disappointed in Celina's apparent lack of respect and had an argument with her. Celina retreated to Josh's arms, while Chloe, like her mother, resorted to getting drunk. Eli took Chloe out of the club and away from the alcohol. With her reserve gone, Chloe told Eli, "My life was so shallow and pointless, and then I started working with my dad. I really thought that I could do something. Make a difference." She felt that she was useless on Destiny because she wasn't a genius like Eli. She also told him that he was a good friend. This upset him because he had romantic feelings for her, but unable to share that, Eli settled for being Chloe's new best friend. (Stargate Universe: 1.07 "Earth"; Kino 1.10 "Nobody Cares")

Chloe finds a good friend in Eli Wallace
This friendship became even more important to Chloe when she found out that Scott had a young son back home on Earth. He thought that his teenage lover had gotten an abortion, but she didn't and kept the existence of his son a secret. She had written a letter and he decided to visit her during his first use of the communication stones, but he couldn't go as himself since Annie didn't have the security clearances. He met the young boy who was named Matt after him. Scott was so depressed and shaken from the realization that he couldn't be his son's father that he withdrew from Chloe for a brief while. Eli stepped to fill in the void by doing yoga exercises with her on the observation deck. (Stargate Universe: 1.09 "Life")

When Col. Young was put on trial for the death of Sgt. Spencer, Young selected Chloe to be his advocate. Although a difficult time for everyone, this moment allowed Chloe to use her education to make a difference. She argued well for Young, butting heads with IOA representative Camile Wray multiple times during the trial, but ultimately, the colonel was exonerated when the kino footage of Spencer's committing suicide was uncovered. (Stargate Universe: 1.10 "Justice")

Hobbies and Other Interests

  • "I'm playing Chloe Armstrong, who is the daughter and aide of a U.S. Senator. I think it's safe to say that Chloe is definitely the most fish out of water. She's got a bit of a wild side to her despite her demur appearance. She's had a really privileged upbringing, so really hasn't to want for anything. You know, I don't think she's had to work as hard as a lot of other people to get to where she is. She doesn't have military, medical, or, you know, very little scientific training, so in the beginning, she feels useless. She's figuring out who she really is and I think she's starting to realize that the life she lived before was superficial in many ways and that she wants to make something of herself, to give back because she herself had been given so much." (Elyse Levesque, MGM Character Profile video)
  • Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father’s footsteps but for now she’s a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father’s tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character. (Character Breakdown)
  • "Chloe is a strong, in the physical sense, intelligent young woman. She is still a young woman and she's still confused and discovering who she is and how she is going to survive in this new life. You know what I think is great about all these characters? They're all human, they're all flawed but it's how they band together that makes them who they are and it's an honour to continue playing these characters that so many women all over the world look up to."
