Wiki Style Sheet

Please follow these conventions to assure consistency within the wiki.

Punctuation Conventions

  • Serial comma preferred for clarity: red, white, and blue (in other words, put one before the and)
  • American or British spelling and punctuation conventions are both okay, but try to keep consistent within an article
  • Double quotation marks, not single
  • ''Stargate SG-1'' (two single quotation marks = italic; italic used for name of program and film)
  • '''Boldface''' (three single quotation marks = boldface; use sparingly for nonhead display type)
  • Acronyms of more than two letters do not use periods: USAF, DHD
  • Acronyms of two letters do use periods: U.S., D.C.

Hyphens, En Dashes, and Em Dashes

  • Style em dashes--like this (closed up), or use the entity: — to make a proper em dash(—)
  • Style ellipsis dots...like this (closed up), or use the entity … to make a proper ellipsis(…)
  • En dashes not used (try to restrain your sorrow)
  • Most common prefixes are not hyphenated (they are solid): pre, post, re, non, co, anti (etc.)
  • Doubled vowels and consonants both okay: preedit, posttraumatic
  • Retain hyphen between prefix and word in italics or starting with a capital letter: pre-Ascension, non-MALP

SG-1-Specific Content

  • Style episode titles as 0.00 "Episode Has A Title" always, in every context
  • All episode titles must confirm to the master list here: Transcripts to ensure correct linking
  • Spell out seasons: Season Eight, not Season 8
  • OK to refer to characters by different names as long as the hotlink is to the proper page: Dr. Daniel Jackson, Daniel Jackson, Dr. Jackson all permitted as references, but the article title is Daniel Jackson
  • For links, it's SciFi.com (not Sci Fi Channel or Sci-Fi Channel, or SciFi Channel, or whatever)
  • Alphabetize keywords/lists of Related Articles; if it's someone's name, then alphabetize under surname, not title
  • Order offsite links however you want; usually Solutions, then Stargatefan, then alphabetical, but don't worry too hard about it because we're also using templates, which will mess up any attempt at creating a specific order anyway

Heads, Display Type, and Hotlinks

  • No hotlinks in article proper for content articles; but hotlinks okay in Category pages
  • For heads, use Cap and Cap, that is, lower case conjunctions (note different style from the episode names, which use 0.00 "Cap And Cap")
  • No hotlinks in heads
  • Hotlinks OK in hard-coded (nonhead) boldface display type
  • Heading "Related Articles" refers to articles inside the wiki
  • Heading "Related Links" refers to offsite links, including links on the main Solutions site
  • Links always go at the bottom of the page

Creation of Content

Please follow these conventions to assure consistency within the wiki.

Keywords

  • All keywords (characters, places, technology, etc.) should be linked in the "Related Articles" section as you go
  • No need to hotlink minor unnamed characters like "Special Forces #3" or "Jaffa #18"
  • Keywords (but not Categories) are usually singular: System Lord, not System Lords
  • Keywords that have known acronyms are styled like this: Thing Spelled Out (TSO)
  • Keywords are styled as Cap and Cap

Names of People

  • Code people's names under the substantive word, not under a title, e.g., Daniel Jackson, not Dr. Daniel Jackson
  • Create redirect pages for characters known under other names
  • Names of joined host/symbiote characters are not normalized across the site; go with what name they are generally known by and create redirect pages for alternative names

Categories

  • Categories (but not keywords) are usually plural: Writers, Directors, Aliens
  • All entries must be assigned to a category

Other

  • Article titles for phrases with acronyms are styled like this: Stargate Command (SGC)
  • Each created article should use a signature with a line above it as shown in the templates
  • Upload images as you go; if you don't have an image, use the placeholder "no image available" image
  • Captions are sentence fragments without ending punctuation such as a period and are descriptive: Teryl Rothery as Dr. Janet Fraiser; 1.01 "Children Of The Gods Part 1"
  • Use the templates on this page to get the heading order; but if content doesn't quite fit properly, feel free to riff within the style in a way that makes sense to you
  • Minimize edits to save disk space, since all previous versions are saved; use the Preview feature and correct what you can; and then save up edits on your hard drive and upload them them all at once (don't tweak endlessly, saving each revision)

Templates

Copy and paste the template text (in this font) into the edit window of the article you are creating:

Film Strip Images

"Film strip" images are left aligned and are stacked one on top of the other. They are thumbnails and have captions like most of the other images we place in our articles. The "film strip" is used when an article is heavy in text and needs to be broken up. The "film strip" method was first used in the Lost City of the Ancients article. Visit the article to see how this "film strip" is rendered.

The code below is for a four-image strip. If you use the film strip in your article, you'll need to do it for all images, even if there is only one image in a section because then all the images would be aligned within the article. Reference the "Lost City of the Ancients" article as an example (there are one-, two-, and four-image strips in this article).

The "|-" tells the wiki to go to the next row of the strip.
