SG-1 sends the captured Jaffa back to Earth for medical treatment and begins a massive search for Mitchell. They find no sign of him, only an obelisk bearing Ancient writing and emitting an energy signature. Daniel and Carter think it can transport them to Mitchell — if they can make it work. They hope that the injured Jaffa on Earth can help them when he wakes up.

SG-1 goes to the planet of Sodan, home of a great Jaffa warrior race who sought Kheb, but found their planet instead. The Sodan warriors are descendants of those Jaffa who opposed the Goa'uld Ishkur 5,000 years ago. When Ishkur learned of their insubordination, he ordered their deaths as traitors, but they fled instead. They set out to find Kheb, hoping their souls would finally know peace, but their search led them to the world which they now inhabit.
Mitchell himself awakens in the hidden village of the Warriors of Sodan. His captors cure his injuries, only to inform him that because he has shed Sodan blood, he must suffer Kel Shak Lo, a ritual battle to the death against a Sodan Warrior. He'll almost certainly be killed.

The Sodan see the Ancients, whom they call the Shen'asai, as the true gods. The Sodan Jaffa follow the Path of the Shen'asai. They have successfully hidden themselves away from the universe, free to pursue the path of wisdom and the nature of the true god without interference from the outside. SG-1 attempts to warn them about the Ori, but one of their leaders, Lord Haikon, has already accepted them as saviors. However a Prior of the Ori happens upon them and perhaps changes their view.
The Sodan value honor, however, so they feel obligated to teach Mitchell their fighting style before the duel. Jolan, a cold, unsympathetic man, becomes Mitchell's instructor. As days pass, Mitchell learns more than just Sodan battle tactics. His captors possess a few pieces of Ancient technology and prize their hard-won Ancient knowledge. They believe that, because they are so close to enlightenment, they shouldn't condescend to care about the rest of the galaxy. Nonetheless, Mitchell's skill and determination slowly earn Jolan's grudging respect.

Mitchell ends up fighting with the Sodan and is then captured by them. He is then trained in the fighting practices of the Sodan, just so he may participate in a ritual fight to the death.
Then, to Mitchell's horror, a Prior of the Ori arrives and is welcomed as a returning friend. His promises of wisdom and power have appealed to the proud Warriors. Mitchell warns Jolan that the Ori are dangerous, but he's too late. The Warriors of Sodan officially become worshippers of the Ori. And Mitchell's battle is only a few days away.

Back on Earth, Teal'c and Daniel have interrogated their Jaffa prisoner, but he refuses to help them find their friend. With Gen. Landry under budgetary pressure to end the expensive search, SG-1 is out of options. Unless Mitchell can win Jolan's trust, he'll be listed as MIA.
Damian Kindler's story Babylon introduces a never-before seen sect of Jaffa called the Sodan, who could play a very important role in shaping the future of the Jaffa council. "Political instability within the Jaffa council is growing," says the writer. "If Teal'c and Bra'tac [Tony Amendola] hope to push forward with their idea of a more democratic stance of representation by population then they need more allies. They're hoping if they can find these mysterious Jaffa warriors called the Sodan then it will help lend more weight to their cause.

"Instead, the Sodan find SG-1 first and a fight ensues. When all the dust settles, Mitchell is seriously wounded along with one of the Sodan. Believing their warrior to be dead, they take Mitchell with them. Our heroes then bring the injured Sodan warrior back to the SGC and save his life. So we get a bit of a Last Samurai vibe going on with Mitchell being kept in the Sodan village. He's being trained to fight to the death in a ritual battle so that he may answer for his crimes because, again, they think he's killed one of them."

Adds Peter DeLuise, who is directing Babylon. "We've got Tony Todd playing Lord Haikon, the head dude of the Sodan. He also played Worf's brother on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. I'm looking forward to working with him. An actor by the name of Jarvis George is playing Volnek, the Sodan warrior who's wounded and whose life we end up saving. Jarvis's reallife brother Jason actually plays his brother [Jolan] in the episode. He's the guy who has all the scenes with Mitchell where he's training him for the big fight."

Précis

Gravely wounded in a battle with Sodan warrior Volnek, Mitchell is taken captive by the legendary Sodan Jaffa sect and nursed back to health in order to prepare him for a fight to the death as atonement for spilling sacred Sodan blood. Meanwhile, Teal'c, Carter and Daniel struggle to convince the 'dead' Sodan they're not his enemy.

SciFi.com Official Summary

Throughout his life, Teal'c has heard rumors about the Warriors of Sodan: Jaffa who rebelled against the Goa'uld system lord Ishkur more than 5,000 years ago, then retreated to a hidden planet where they still live in freedom.

Having located the planet, SG-1 is eager to meet these legendary warriors. But the team doesn't get a warm greeting — instead, they're ambushed. Only one badly injured warrior remains behind.
